Jack Scanlan, a union leader, returns to work after a heart attack. His Johnny Scanlan, a tree surgeon who wants more adventure in his life, arranges a welcome-back surprise party for Jack. The plan backfires when the surprise triggers another heart attack, and Jack dies.

At the funeral, the members of his large, dysfunctional family are drawn together and forced to confront their emotional baggage. The relatives include Frank Scanlan, a labor leader who longs to live up to his father’s expectations; Terry Scanlan, a dancer; her ex-husband Boyd Pinter; Peter Syracusa, an embalmer who is in love with Terry; and Nora Scanlan, a younger sister who is a nun based in Latin America. There is also Cassie Slocombe, a woman who appears at the funeral and may or may not have been their late father’s mistress.

Everybody’s assorted issues are brought to light as relatives reconnect, reveal private fears, and reckon with the past while navigating the present. The gathering becomes a mirror of family dynamics—moments of warmth, sparks of tension, and tender, awkward honesty—showing that even a big, unruly clan can find its way toward understanding, even if the road is tangled and unpredictable.

All in the family unfolds as a quiet, observant drama about how lineage, loyalty, and memory shape the people we become, and how a single death can force a clan to confront what they’ve learned to hide.
