In 1930s Spain, the stunning Pandora Reynolds, an American singer, captivates the hearts of many, driving them to near madness with her beauty. Among her admirers is Reggie, who tragically chooses to poison himself over unrequited love. Surrounded by friends, including the archeologist Geoffrey and his niece Janet, Pandora eventually consents to marry Stephen, a race car driver. She challenges him to prove his devotion by daring him to push his cherished race car off a cliff.

However, Pandora’s gaze soon drifts to a mysterious yacht anchored offshore. She sheds her clothes and swims towards it, discovering Hendrick van der Zee, a Dutch painter engrossed in a portrait of her. Instantly, there’s an attraction as Pandora notices their striking similarity. Captivated by the brooding Hendrick, she arranges a dinner meeting with him.

As events unfold, Geoffrey requests Hendrick to translate an ancient Dutch legend that turns out to be the tale of The Flying Dutchman. This becomes a foreboding reenactment, as the Dutchman, driven by jealousy, believes Pandora has been disloyal and tragically ends her life. During his trial, as he is confronted with guilt, he raves about the falsehoods of Heaven, asserting that if he is mistaken, God has the power to do with his soul as He wishes. That night, the door to his prison cell remains ominously open, allowing the Dutchman to return to his ship for sleep. In his dreams, a divine voice reveals that Pandora’s fidelity was true, condemning him to sail eternally with ghostly crew members until he finds a woman whose love is potent enough to sacrifice for him. He is granted the chance to disembark every seven years in search of this extraordinary love.

As fate would have it, when Pandora encounters Hendrick while he is deep in thought, she intuitively senses his internal turmoil. We soon learn that Hendrick is indeed the infamous Flying Dutchman, and he sees Pandora as the reincarnation of his lost love. Meanwhile, Juan Matalvo, a celebrated matador, returns and is furious over Pandora’s engagement to Stephen. Jealousy consumes him upon witnessing a kiss shared between Pandora and Hendrick.

Hendrick, now engulfed by the belief that he has discovered his long-lost love, pushes Pandora away when she declares her willingness to die for him. He leaves her heartbroken, realizing that his love for her is too profound to allow such a sacrifice. At the same time, matador Matalvo plots to win Pandora over, scheming to eliminate Hendrick.

One fateful night, Matalvo ambushes Hendrick, stabbing him in an attempt to remove him from the equation, yet the curse ensures that Hendrick cannot perish. He rises after Matalvo departs. During a grand bullfight, Matalvo, struck with fear at the sight of Hendrick—whom he believes to be a ghost—loses focus and is gored by the bull, ultimately revealing the truth to Pandora as he lies dying.

Hendrick returns to his ship, but realizing the significance of their bond, Pandora swims to join him. Together, they understand that destiny has intertwined their fates, and by declaring her willingness to die for him, Pandora breaks Hendrick’s curse. As a violent storm surges, it wrecks the ship, leading to a tragic conclusion as the lovers—Pandora and the Flying Dutchman—are discovered lifeless on the shore, eternally entwined in each other’s embrace.
