Enchanted Island 1958

Two 19th-century sailors, Abner, [Dana Andrews], and Tom, [Don Dubbins], desert their ship after Captain Vangs, [Ted de Corsia], refuses them shore leave and warns them that the island ahead is a trap. They press on and soon discover that their tropical paradise hides a far darker truth: a cannibal stronghold guarded by two tribes, one friendly and the other, the feared Typee, a militant cannibal clan.

On the shore, a white man named Jimmy Dooley, [Arthur Shields], offers a wary welcome and a supposed safe hideout, but the arrangement quickly unravels. Dooley has been hired by Vangs to track down his missing sailors, turning a supposed refuge into a dangerous web of loyalty and betrayal. The newcomers must sort through shifting loyalties while trying to survive the island’s volatile politics and hidden dangers.

Abner becomes acquainted with Fayaway, [Jane Powell], the adopted daughter of Chief Mehevi, [Friedrich von Ledebur], who carries the memory of a shipwrecked sailor’s liaison with a native woman. Their budding relationship stands in stark contrast to the island’s brutal history, and it pulls Abner deeper into the island’s social rifts. The two cultures collide as conflict erupts between the tribes, and Abner finds himself forced to choose between freedom and a life he begins to crave on this new land.

As the fighting intensifies, Tom sees a chance to escape back to civilization, but Abner chooses to stay—and to fight for the life he’s come to value with Fayaway by his side. The chief Mehevi, recognizing the complexity of the relationship, gives his reluctant blessing for Abner and Fayaway to wed, a union that would seal a fragile alliance between their two worlds.

Yet happiness is short-lived. A shift in power and a looming sense of doom reveal that Tom did not actually flee the island, and Abner and Fayaway’s presence during a cannibal ritual draws the wrath of the Typee and the stern judgment of Mehevi. The lovers are condemned, and a desperate escape becomes a race against time and fate.

When they attempt to run, Abner manages to reach the boat, but Fayaway is not so lucky. A spear ends her life, and the scene becomes a brutal reminder of the island’s unyielding laws. Grasping Fayaway in his arms, Abner carries her back toward the vessel and toward Captain Vangs, who, in that moment, seems to remember why sailors should never venture onto land in the first place.

In the end, the island reveals its harsh lesson: even dreams of paradise can be shadowed by danger, loyalty, and the cost of choosing love over survival. The voyage closes with a somber understanding that some shores are best left unexplored, and that the sea, not the land, is where these sailors truly belong.
