The Forbidden Room 2015

Inside a submarine, a weary crew carries a volatile cargo that will explode if they ever surface. With oxygen thinning and the atmosphere turning claustrophobic, fear tightens its grip on the hull. A mysterious woodsman Roy Dupuis forcibly boards the vessel, and the crew wonder if his sudden intrusion might unlock a path to escape their peril. The team threads a winding route through a labyrinth of rooms and corridors as they push toward the captain’s chamber, each step bringing them closer to a tense confrontation with fate.

As the ship groans under pressure, the crew’s fear gives way to a cascade of stories that spill into each other, creating a layered, almost dreamlike tapestry of narratives that reverberate through the tight confines of the submarine. The film’s most vital sub-story follows the woodsman and his fellow “sapling-jacks” as they attempt to rescue a woman named Margot from depraved kidnappers. Other interwoven tales unfold with equal intensity: a surgeon is abducted by a crew of “women skeletons” who operate as insurance defrauders, twisting law and morality into a perverse game; a madman on a train is kept under the watch of a womanizing psychiatrist, whose authority cracks under the pressure of the scene; a mustache longs to comfort the widow of the man whose face it once adorned, a provocative image that gnaws at identity and memory; and a doctor is cursed by a sculpted bust of Janus, the two-faced god, a symbol that haunts science and conscience alike.

When the crew finally reaches the captain’s “forbidden room,” they discover him incapacitated, and the ship’s crisis intensifies. Most of the men perish from asphyxiation, but the woodsman finds an astonishing twist: the volatile cargo has transformed into his love, Margot. A kiss between them erupts into a montage of endings drawn from The Book of Climaxes, and the film folds into an abrupt, inconclusive finale that refuses easy resolution and lingers on the possibilities of what might come next.
