Mysterious Island of Beautiful Women 1979

Flower, Rosalind Chao, stands at the center of a mixed-race group of orphan girls and a Catholic nun who flee Indochina in 1954, escaping the brutal changes of the region as the communists take over. Their fragile flight is battered by a sudden, violent storm, sending them into a tense struggle for survival as they drift toward an uncertain fate. The years pass, and by 1979 a different crisis unfolds: six men from an oil company are attempting to reach Guam in a sea plane so that one of them—injured and blind—can receive medical care. Their journey goes off course when radio and navigation equipment fail during an electrical storm, and they crash on the shore of a remote, forgotten island.

On this island they encounter a community of women in their late twenties who live in fear of men and frequently clash with a nearby tribe known as the head-choppers. The women speak in limited, almost childlike terms and give each other simple, familiar nicknames. They gather around a distorted cross formed by a three-bladed propeller mounted on a post, where they recite prayers and rituals that underscore their isolation. The women follow Lizabeth, a ruthless leader who takes her counsel from an unseen “sister” on all major questions, enforcing a harsh order that the men must reckon with. The villagers recount an old, troubling tale: in the past two women were impregnated by natives, but the male child was killed while a girl survived, a memory that haunts the island’s social rules.

The six men—Wendell, Gordon Duvall, Danny, Mike Stapleton, J.J., and Stu—try to make peace with their surprising hosts, forming fragile friendships amid suspicions and danger. Some of the visitors manage to win trust among the women, while others are captured and threatened with death on Lizabeth’s orders, forcing grim choices and dire consequences. In a pivotal moment, one man discovers the long-destroyed plane that the girls had crashed in twenty-five years earlier; the pilots were killed and the nun was grievously injured, leaving behind a hidden trove of memories.

The nun’s diary, written when she could no longer speak, reveals how the oldest girl—now the mother figure for the others—nursed and cared for her for years, until the nun’s death five years later. This revelation shatters the veneer of unquestioned authority on the island, undermining Lizabeth and setting in motion a fatal reckoning: the leader is killed by the very woman who had earlier killed the male baby. With the power struggle resolved, the survivors salvage a working “direction finder” from the other plane and use it to chart a course back to the world, escaping the island aboard the plane together with the women who have chosen to leave the shadow of their past behind.
