Against the backdrop of the American Civil War, Cyrus Harding, Herbert Brown, and Neb Nugent, along with war correspondent Gideon Spilitt, escape Libby Prison in Richmond. They seize a gas balloon and a Rebel guard, Pencroft, who can pilot it, then ride a storm-wracked flight westward across the Pacific. The voyage is perilous, and a vicious squall hurls them toward an uncharted island—a wild place of tropical jungles, barren plains, and active volcanoes.

As they explore, danger follows in the form of a giant crab that stalks them along the shore. They manage to drive the creature into a boiling geyser and later turn it into dinner, a reminder of how scarce resources can force rough compromises in a desperate new world. Soon after, they discover two unconscious English ladies washed ashore by the same storm: Lady Mary Fairchild and her niece Elena Fairchild. The castaways decide to shelter in a cave once inhabited by another castaway, building a fragile life among the island’s hazards.

A chest washes ashore, containing rifles, nautical charts, and a worn copy of Robinson Crusoe. The rifles bear markings that reveal a link to the submarine Nautilus, a clue that hints at a larger, more mysterious world beyond the island. Gideon Spilitt regales the group with stories of the Nautilus and its enigmatic creator, Captain Nemo, whose alleged destruction off Mexico eight years earlier sounds almost unbelievable.

Using one of the charts as a guide, the survivors begin plotting a route and start constructing a small boat that might carry them home. Their departure is delayed by a curious encounter: a giant flightless bird confronts Mary, Elena, and Spilitt, and, when it threatens Elena, Herbert Brown arrives in time to knife the creature. Strangely, the bird’s death is followed by the discovery that it was killed by a bullet that none of them fired.

Weeks pass, and the group stumbles into a hive of giant bees. They race for safety into a flooded cave, where a glint of metal reveals the presence of the Nautilus itself. They gain entry to the submarine and begin to explore, while back outside a pirate ship looms on the horizon. A clash erupts, and the castaways’ courage pays off when an explosion sinks the pirate vessel with all aboard.

The castaways finally meet Captain Nemo aboard the Nautilus, a figure who has been quietly guiding them from the shadows. He explains his goal: to expand the world’s food resources through genetic and technological breakthroughs, a solution he intends to demonstrate to the world through them. He has also equipped them with remarkable tools, including an air-breathing system that can refloat ships and specialized shell-like air tanks that allow divers to breathe underwater. Nemo’s plan hinges on using these tools to reveal his achievements to a wary world.

As the new alliance sails from the island, they encounter one final challenge—a towering Ammonite that tests their underwater capabilities. Despite the obstacle, the group manages to raise the only seaworthy vessel—the pirate ship—and set a course for home. But the island’s central volcano roars to life, erupting with catastrophic force, killing Nemo and destroying the Nautilus. The remaining castaways endure the blast and continue their journey home, inspired by Nemo’s dream of using science and peace to ease hunger and bring lasting global peace. They vow to carry that dream forward, even as they face an uncertain world ahead.
