Music in the Air 1934

Aspiring songwriter Karl Roder, Douglass Montgomery, heads to the big city with his beloved Sieglinde Lessing, June Lang, and her father Walter Lessing, Al Shean, who has just written a new song he believes could take the world by storm, with lyrics by Karl.

In this bustling music-filled world, Karl and Sieglinde become tangled in the stormy relationship between opera star Frieda Hotzfelt, Gloria Swanson, and librettist Bruno Mahler, John Boles. Their constant bickering hides a shared drive for success, and the tension between art and personal life constantly simmers as the idea for a new show takes shape.

When the show’s composer suddenly leaves town, the team decides to use Walter’s song — not only as a practical solution but also because Bruno has fallen for Sieglinde, and Frieda has fallen for Karl, though Karl does not return the sentiment. The city’s glamour clashes with the reality of ambition, and Karl begins to realize that the urban whirlwind may not be the right place for him.

Bruno then convinces Sieglinde that she is destined for the stage, so she stays behind to replace Frieda as the prima donna in the new opera. As opening night approaches, doubt spreads through the company: Sieglinde’s performance is questioned, and the crew ultimately decides to bring Frieda back to take the lead. Walter confronts them, calling them cruel for breaking his daughter’s heart, while they reply that the audience can be crueler still, and they are trying to spare Sieglinde and her family the worst of it. In the end, the conflict is resolved not by idealism but by the practical needs of the show and the livelihoods of everyone involved.

Sieglinde and Walter retreat to their hometown, and she goes to apologize to Karl for not listening to his counsel. Yet even as they part, Walter can still take pride in the fact that his music is featured in a real show, and the entire town tunes in to the broadcast on the radio. Meanwhile, Frieda and Bruno are together again, but their relationship remains a volatile mix of affection and dispute, echoing the larger tension between art, fame, and personal happiness that surrounds them all.
