In 1989, as a midnight shift wraps up at the Raniganj Coalfields, a routine blast is set off to open new coal veins, but the operation reveals a dangerous twist: the shaft begins to leak water. An emergency evacuation is ordered, yet the Behra section—a group of miners who are deaf—faces the grim reality that their signals might not reach them in time. While more than 200 workers are pulled to safety, 60+ from the Behra section remain underground, and six miners tragically drown in the attempt to flee the collapsing mine. At a nearby, watching pit, Jaswant Singh Gill—a capable manager—spots emergency vehicles and decides to step in, risking friction with colleagues who doubt there is any chance left to save anyone.

Gill arrives on the scene to stiff resistance from some who believe the worst has already happened. The head of the flooded mine, RK Ujjwal, pleads for help, and Gill agrees to lead a rescue operation, coordinating a small, determined team. He enlists two key partners: Tapan Ghosh, a disgraced surveyor, and Bindal, a drilling engineer, to chart a hopeful path to the highest point of the mine. Their plan hinges on drilling an 8-inch borehole and placing a signal flashlight so the trapped miners might see a beacon from above. But the miners are blocked behind a brick wall, and the brightness never reaches them.

Meanwhile, a rival plan stews at Coal India headquarters. D Sen, the manager in charge, pushes a more dangerous idea: a closed mineshaft breached by the explosion could offer a shortcut to rescue, even as Gill warns that the shaft is heavily flooded and inaccessible. Sen’s crew uncovers six bodies and the operation stalls, dimming hopes further. The tension intensifies as a rescue dog belonging to one of the miners picks up their desperate cries and barks at Gill, a small but clear sign that life remains below.

Undeterred, Gill refines his approach. The 8-inch borehole becomes a lifeline, delivering food, water, and medicines while laying down a working communications line. Through a Davy lamp, the miners discover the ominous buildup of carbon dioxide as water floods their shaft. Gill devises a bold solution: a 29-inch-wide capsule that can pull miners up one by one from a larger borehole. Yet Sen sabotages the effort by having key crane components removed, hampering the rescue’s speed just as time runs perilously low.

With oxygen dwindling, Gill and his team persevere, moving from hope to methodical, painstaking operation. They switch to a manual winching process in a race against time, knowing there are still around 48 hours of breathable air left for everyone. The pressure peaks as Govardhan Roy, a local MLA and union leader, confronts Sen and compels him to admit his sabotage. Under this stress, the crane is repaired and brought back into service, accelerating the rescue. Gill appears to faint from oxygen deprivation, yet he clings to his resolve and uses a metal tool—a kada—as a signaling device to guide the capsule on its lift. One by one, the miners are pulled to safety, with Gill himself the last to be removed from the perilous depths.

In the aftermath, Gill is rewarded with a significant recognition: a Rs. 1 lakh cheque and an immediate promotion, a symbolic vindication of the arduous effort. The previously disgraced surveyor is acknowledged for his perseverance and finally paid his due wages, marking a hard-earned sense of justice and closure for those who fought against time and peril to bring the miners home.
