In the 1910s, near a dangerous swamp outside Fargo, Georgia, Ben Tyler [Jeffrey Hunter] and his father Zack Taylor [Tom Tully] venture into the wilderness in search of two missing trappers. The trek is grueling, and along the way trouble arises when Ben’s hunting dog, Careless, disappears while chasing a deer.
When Ben searches for the dog, he is struck on the head by an unseen assailant and awakens to find himself captured by Jim Harper [Walter Brennan] and his fierce, beautiful daughter Laurie [Jean Peters] Harper, who have fled to live in the wilderness after Jim was accused of murder eight years earlier. Jim admits to one killing, claiming it was in self-defense, but insists that the other murder was committed by the vicious Longden brothers. Although Laurie’s trust is cautious, Ben believes Jim’s story and reveals that he wishes to return to civilization to receive a fair trial.
Back in the village, Ben’s decision to head back enrages his father and his fiancée, Noreen McGowan [Constance Smith], who declares she won’t wait and hints at moving on with another man. At a dance, Noreen provokes a fight with her date, and Ben’s engagement is ultimately canceled. Noreen then tracks Ben to Laurie and learns her true identity. She falsely claims to Laurie that Ben has betrayed the Harpers and she informs the Longden brothers about Ben’s interference.
As revenge, the Longdens—Dave Longden [Jack Elam] and Harry Longden [Pat Hogan]—nearly drown Ben and then set out to find the Harpers to kill them so that the truth will stay buried. Ben ventures back into the swamp to warn Jim and Laurie, and at first they doubt his warnings until he becomes a target himself. Jim is shot by one of the Longdens, and Laurie responds with a trap that kills one brother and captures the other.
In the end, the Harpers’ name is cleared, and they are able to return to civilization, with Ben in tow as they face a new chapter together. The story weaves tension, loyalty, and the fragile line between justice and vengeance, anchored by the stark wilderness and the evolving bond between Ben and Laurie.
