Swamp Water 1941

In the remote Okefenokee Swamp, a local man, Ben Dana Andrews encounters Tom Keefer Walter Brennan, a fugitive from a murder charge who has been wandering the marsh in search of his dog. The two strike a rough, mutually beneficial partnership: Ben hunts and traps animals, selling what they catch and dividing the proceeds with Keefer as they navigate their unusual alliance. This uneasy alliance begins to raise eyebrows among the townsfolk, who grow increasingly suspicious of their activities and the ease with which they evade conventional norms.

Keefer’s life becomes more personal when his daughter Julie Keefer Anne Baxter enters the picture, living in straitened circumstances, and Ben steps in to help her appear more decent and to improve her prospects. The tension between the community and Keefer intensifies as the story builds toward a dangerous accusation: Keefer is accused of murdering Deputy Shep Collins, a charge that conceals a deeper truth—the actual crime was committed by the Dorson brothers. The crime is followed by perjury in the investigation, orchestrated with the help of Jesse Wick John Carradine.

To clear Keefer, Ben pressures Wick, bringing the truth to light and ensuring Keefer won’t bear the blame alone. As the swamp journey winds toward its end, Ben and Keefer head back toward town with a fragile hope for a normal life, only to be ambushed by the Dorson brothers—Ward Bond and Guinn ‘Big Boy’ Williams—who stand in the way of that return. One of the brothers sinks into a mudhole, and Keefer confronts the other with a stark choice: pursue a steady life in the swamp, or return to town to face hanging.

Back in town, Keefer cleans up and—alongside Ben—joins a dance that marks a moment of restored, if precarious, normalcy. The two men share a quietly hopeful resolve, and Keefer’s presence at the celebration signals the possibility of renewal beyond years of flight and deception. The narrative remains grounded in its low-key moral stakes and the resilience of people who seek belonging, even when the path there is tangled with danger, suspicion, and hard-fought truth.
