In the waning months of World War II, the Empire of Japan receives a final, enigmatic gift from its collapsing Nazi ally: the I-507, a highly advanced submarine carrying experimental technology that could tilt the balance of power. The mission, unveiled by the grim Chief of Staff Asakura, comes in the wake of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Its objective is to intercept U.S. ships transporting a third nuclear weapon to Tinian Island, the principal base from which American B-29s are hammering the Japanese home islands. The weight of history presses on every decision as the crew prepares for a voyage that could alter the war’s outcome.
The man chosen to lead this perilous operation is Commander Masami, Koji Yakusho. A brilliant destroyer of enemy ships, Masami has been relieved of command after opposing the Navy’s increasing reliance on suicide tactics. He is given one last chance to redeem himself, and his zeal is evident, though he remains ignorant of the many secrets concealed within the I-507’s hull. The mission rests on his sharp instincts, his strategic mind, and a willingness to confront a plan that intertwines cutting-edge technology with dangerous moral complexities.
Once at sea, the crew dynamics become a delicate balance of trust and secrecy. Lt. Takasu, the owlish imaging-system technician, is reticent about what the I-507 actually holds or how its systems work, and he withholds critical details from Masami as the submarine ventures farther from home. The tension is heightened by the discovery that two crew members belong to the Kaiten suicide corps, a revelation that unsettles Masami and prompts questions about loyalty, obedience, and the costs of war. Neither Masami nor the sailors fully understands why these men are aboard, adding another layer of mystery to an already perilous mission.
Meanwhile, U.S. naval forces watch the I-507 with unusual vigilance. A teenage girl, Paula Atsuko Ebner, Yuu Kashii, is woven into the master plan in a way that testifies to the war’s reach into civilian lives. On the American side, one of the minisub pilots, Yukito Origasa, Satoshi Tsumabuki, steps into a protector role for Paula, creating a fragile, human link between the two protagonists and underscoring the personal stakes behind a high-stakes reconnaissance operation. The story threads together ambition, fear, loyalty, and the unpredictable consequences of war, painting a portrait of a doomed mission where every decision could ripple outward in unforeseen ways.
