Bullet Train Explosion Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave Bullet Train Explosion 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and 63 on Metacritic. Our Echo Score gives it 65/100, strongest in art & craft (78) and weakest in character & emotion (48).
Bullet Train Explosion Echo Score Breakdown
Bullet Train Explosion delivers a technically proficient action experience that struggles to fully engage on a deeper level. The film’s editing and production design maintain a constant sense of forward momentum, and its practical effects and model work showcase meticulous craftsmanship. However, the screenplay offers limited emotional stakes and character development, which undercuts narrative investment. While it provides reliable thrills and visual energy, the overall impact remains uneven and primarily surface-driven.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 78
Art & Craft displays considerable technical skill throughout the production. In terms of direction and cinematography, the film delivers sharp framing and an understated color palette that emphasizes speed and tension. Production design and editing combine practical model work with brisk cutting to sustain momentum. Overall, the film’s craft elements are notably polished and contribute positively to its visual identity.
- Character & Emotion 48
Character & Emotion suffers from limited depth despite several committed performances. When it comes to acting and chemistry, some cast members deliver measured portrayals, yet most figures remain underdeveloped. The script offers few opportunities for emotional resonance or meaningful growth, and antagonists’ motivations feel thin. Ultimately, the shallow character writing undermines audience connection and reduces dramatic impact.
- Story & Flow 62
Story & Flow presents a blend of effective pacing and narrative shortcomings. In terms of plot coherence, setpieces are arranged to maintain continuous momentum, but the screenplay relies on familiar blockbuster conventions rather than original twists. The tension escalates through frequent technical challenges, yet a thin script and lack of meaningful stakes limit engagement. Overall, the story remains moderately engaging but rarely transcends formulaic structure.
- Sensory Experience 72
In terms of Sensory Experience, the film delivers vivid stunt sequences and a constant sense of velocity. The score and sound design work in tandem to reinforce high-stakes atmospheres, while visual style emphasizes rapid cuts and bold color contrasts. However, the soundtrack lacks a memorable thematic core, and some action setpieces fall short of genuine intensity. Overall, the sensory elements are engaging yet not distinctly resonant.
- Rewatch Factor 58
Rewatch Factor is limited by the film’s emphasis on surface thrills over substantive depth. While seat-of-the-pants setpieces and brisk pacing offer immediate excitement, repeated viewings reveal sparse character development and minimal narrative surprises. The practical effects retain some appeal, but the lack of emotional complexity and few unexpected moments reduce replay value. Ultimately, the movie provides momentary enjoyment but fades quickly on subsequent viewings.

Spoilers ahead
Hayabusa 60 (5060B) is an E5 Series Shinkansen traveling from Shin-Aomori to Tokyo, under the attentive supervision of Kazuya Takaichi. Shortly after the train begins its journey, an anonymous caller contacts the JR East headquarters in Tokyo, claiming that they have placed a bomb on board that will detonate if the train slows down below 100 km/h. The caller’s threat becomes a grim reality when a freight train, 2074, is destroyed in Aomori-Higashi, prompting JR East to halt all trains on the Tōhoku Shinkansen to clear a route for Hayabusa 60. The train’s driver, Chika Matsumoto, is given strict orders to maintain a speed above 120 km/h while keeping the bomb’s existence a secret from the passengers.
