Legend of the Lost 1957

In Timbuktu, experienced guide Joe January reluctantly joins a Sahara treasure-hunting expedition led by Paul Bonnard, a man driven by a stubborn need to prove his late father’s claim of having found a lost city. Dita, a woman with a checkered past, becomes infatuated with Paul and with his willingness to overlook her history. She insists on joining the journey, despite Joe’s protests. The group pushes through a grueling, sun-soaked landscape, and a tense attraction grows between Joe and Dita, complicating the mission.

As water runs dangerously low, the travelers finally reach the ruins of the ancient city and stumble upon a well. There, three skeletons lie—one woman and two men—hinting that Paul’s father once found a woman in the arms of his guide, killed them, and then killed himself. With no obvious treasure in sight, Paul’s faith in his father shatters and he drinks to cope with the shock.

Yet a treasure is found after Joe deciphers clues left by Paul’s father in his Bible. They load the wealth and prepare to depart at dawn. Paul makes a brazen attempt to seduce Dita; she rejects him, and a fight erupts as Joe defends her. By night, Paul slips away in the darkness, stealing the animals, supplies, and the treasure, leaving Joe and Dita to die.

Joe and Dita chase Paul on foot, eventually catching him. Paul is dehydrated and unconscious; while Joe and Dita dig for vital water, Paul regains consciousness, buries the treasure again, and launches a knife attack from behind. Dita shoots and kills Paul. Just as a caravan appears on the horizon, Joe and Dita are rescued, their ordeal ending with a hard-won sense of relief.
