Haricharan Sanjeev Kumar and Aarti Jaya Bachchan are poor youngsters who are deaf and mute. They fall in love and choose to marry, building a life together despite the odds. Haricharan sustains them by working as a shoe-shiner, scraping by with quiet dignity. When they welcome a child, tragedy strikes: the infant dies at the hands of a greedy man named Kanu Govardhan Asrani. The loss shakes them to their core, yet resilience prevails, and they are blessed with a second child, discovering a slow but hopeful happiness in their home. A turning point arrives when a police officer notices Haricharan’s integrity and kindness and offers him a job, a chance to rise above poverty. With this opportunity, Haricharan earns more, their financial situation improves, and their family steadies as their son grows up under their care and protection.

Years pass, and Aarti dies, leaving Haricharan to continue supporting the family through steady work at a company. His employer’s daughter, who is deaf and mute, becomes part of a new arrangement: the employer hopes to fix Haricharan’s son’s marriage to his daughter. Haricharan hesitates at the prospect, wary of the power imbalance, but the employer’s persuasion—fueled by wealth—begins to weigh on him. Seeing the daughter evokes memories of Aarti, and Haricharan reluctantly agrees to the match. The son, however, strongly opposes marrying someone who is deaf and mute, causing distress for his father. Haricharan admonishes his son, reminding him that even his mother was mute, a pointed reflection on compassion and acceptance. Faced with his father’s emotional appeal, the son comes to realize his mistake and ultimately agrees to the marriage with the employer’s daughter.
