In southern Tamil Nadu, two neighboring villages, Melur and Podiyankulam in Tirunelveli, live under a tense caste-based divide. Podiyankulam’s residents, many from oppressed communities, are repeatedly denied access to a bus stop, forcing them to use Melur’s stop and fueling simmering resentment among Melur’s dominant locals. Despite petitions to authorities, Podiyankulam remains without a stop, a situation shaped by the influence of Melur’s local government.
Karnan, Dhanush, a bold youth from Podiyankulam, rises from the friction between the villages after winning the local deity’s ceremonial sword, an honor that had eluded his community for years. Weeks later, he enters an open selection camp for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). His grandfather, Lal as Yaema Raja, worries that Karnan’s hot-headedness could derail any chance at government service and remains watchful over him.
Within Podiyankulam, Karnan and Yaema Raja are seen as unruly by many, except for the village chieftain, G. M. Kumar who portrays Duriyodhanan and offers them support. This uneasy dynamic unsettles Vadamaalaiyan, one of the village heads, who longs to marry Karnan’s younger sister Padmini, a match he pursues despite social friction. Draupadhi, Rajisha Vijayan, who loves Karnan, misreads a dispute between Karnan and her brother and ends their relationship. The story also marks the loss of Karnan’s younger sister, who dies early in the tale after saving money for Padmini’s marriage.
Tensions between Melur and Podiyankulam escalate when Karnan, his friends, and Yaema Raja vandalize a bus that ignores a pregnant woman. The bus owner lodges a complaint, and the district’s police Superintendent Kannabiran, Natarajan Subramaniam, arrives. Although the bus dispute is resolved to some degree, Kannabiran’s pride is wounded, and he makes it clear that the villagers must always yield to authority. He orders Podiyankulam’s village heads to the police station to sign, then assaults them for hours and orders unrelated cases filed against them.
The next morning, Karnan and the others go to the station to ask about the elders. The police pretend ignorance, sending them away. A tea-shop helper explains what happened the previous night, prompting Karnan to storm the station. The group fights their way in, finds the elders on a rooftop under the burning sun, and carries them home using a confiscated tractor. Podiyankulam braces for a police assault, sealing themselves behind barricades as they prepare to defend their community.
A District Collector’s intervention urges Kannabiran to avoid casualties, and Draupadhi and Vadamaalaiyan begin to reconcile with Karnan while Yaema Raja works to ensure the villagers’ security. Karnan receives his CRPF appointment letter, and though he resists leaving, Yaema Raja and the villagers urge him to accept a better future. Moments after Karnan departs, the police unleash a brutal attack on the village. In a desperate act to shield his people, Yaema Raja sacrifices himself through self-immolation, provoking Karnan to return with the local deity’s sword.
Karnan confronts Kannabiran, traps him inside a hut, and orders the officers to bring in the MP, MLA, and other key personnel within an hour. Inside the hut, Karnan and Kannabiran clash; Karnan overpowers him and binds him. Kannabiran’s caste arrogance flares as he predicts the village’s destruction, but Karnan’s rage remains focused on justice. In the ensuing struggle, Karnan kills Kannabiran and is arrested.
Ten years pass and Karnan is released. Podiyankulam now finally has a bus stop, and many village youths have pursued education, while several elder heads succumbed to illnesses tied to the violence of the past. Padmini, now married, stands among the village’s community hall where Yaema Raja’s portrait dominates a large wall. The community gathers to welcome Karnan home, and the village reevaluates its path forward, balancing pride with the need for progress.
