Karnan 1964

In a sweeping mythic saga, the unmarried princess Kunti receives a powerful boon from the sage Durvasa: by uttering a mantra she can invoke a child begotten by any god. When she playfully tests the gift, the Sun blesses her with a son, whom she quietly places in the sacred Ganges to shield herself from shame. The infant is rescued by the loyal royal charioteer Adirathan and raised as his own, given the name Karnan, Sivaji Ganesan.

As years pass, Karnan discovers that Adhirathan is only his adoptive father, and he resolves not to follow in the charioteer’s footsteps. He trains far from home to become a skilled warrior, returning after years with mastery in archery. In a royal tournament meant to showcase the valor of educated princes, Karnan challenges the celebrated Pandava Arjunan, whose reputation has preceded him. The crowd’s cheers for Arjunan sharpen Karnan’s sense of pride and injustice, and he is briefly denied a chance to compete because of his humble birth. Yet Duryodhanan, the crown prince and a close ally of Karna’s, steps in to restore Karnan’s standing, crowning him the king of Anga and forging a loyalty that will shape much of what is to come; Karnan thus becomes the close friend of Duryodhanan and his wife Bhanumathi, Savitri.

One day, Indran, disguised as a Brahmin, asks Karnan for his armour and ear ornaments as alms to weaken him. Out of generosity, Karnan relinquishes these sacred pieces, and Indra, pleased with his virtue, endows him with a mighty weapon, the Nagastra. Karnan, now buoyed by this divine support, becomes the student of Parashuramar, seeking the Brahmastra. However, Parashuramar soon discovers Karnan’s true birth as a Kshatriya and, offended by the deception, strips Karnan of the Brahmastra and banishes him.

Karnan’s fortunes shift again when he rescues Subhangi, a princess, from danger in an out-of-control chariot; they fall in love and marry. The truth of Karnan’s lineage eventually reaches Krishnan, a Pandava ally, who informs Kunti that Karnan is her first-born son. Karnan himself learns the truth soon after, and Kunti meets him with a startling arrangement: he will not attack any of her sons (the Pandavas) except Arjunan during the looming Kurukshetra War, and he will use the Nagastra against Arjunan only once. Karnan declines to join the Pandavas and remains a close friend of Duryodhanan, loyal to a path that diverges from his birthright.

Before the war, Bhishmar is named commander and begins selecting generals, but Karnan, still mindful of his low birth, is relegated to a lower rank. The war unfolds, and Karnan is promoted to lead in Bhishmar’s stead. He fights alongside his son Vrishasenan, who fights bravely but is killed by Arjunan. In the pivotal moment, Karnan attempts to unleash the Nagastra on Arjunan, yet Krishnan, NT Rama Rao, intervenes and blocks the weapon’s strike. When Karnan’s chariot wheel sinks into a hole and he dismounts to free it, Arjunan rains arrows, injuring him severely. Krishnan, in disguise as a Brahmin, asks Karnan for his virtues as a donation, and Karnan’s generous act appears to redeem him, even as Arjunan delivers a fatal volley after Karnan has given away his remaining strength.

The Pandavas mourn the loss of Karnan, and Subhangi is traumatized by her husband’s death. Arjunan feels remorse for killing Karnan, until Krishnan explains that the fates—shaped by Indran’s and Parashuramar’s curses—helped seal his end. The tale closes with Karnan meeting his celestial father—the Sun—in the afterlife, a convergence of birth, virtue, and destiny that echoes through the ages.
