Pariyerum Perumal, alias Pariyan, is a youth from Puliyankulam village near Tirunelveli who belongs to an oppressed caste. The film opens with the brutal murder of his beloved dog, Karuppi, a stark reminder of the caste hegemony that shadows his world. The weight of tradition and prejudice sits heavy on every step he takes.

Pariyan sets his sights on Government Law College, Tirunelveli, with a clear dream: to become a lawyer like B. R. Ambedkar. There, he crosses paths with Jo, a naive yet warmhearted girl from Ambasamudram who offers to teach him English. Their budding friendship grows on mutual respect and honesty, and Jo’s easy smile begins to soften the rigid boundaries Pariyan has known. This connection, however, unsettles Sankaralingam, Jo’s cousin and a fellow law student who sees Pariyan as a threat to his own sense of caste supremacy. Tensions simmer as a fragile bond forms in the shadows of a hostile social order.

The film’s tensions escalate at a family wedding to which Jo invites Pariyan. Sankaralingam and his friends launch a brutal assault on Pariyan, and their cruelty includes public humiliation. The attack ends with Pariyan being humiliated as they urinate on him, a stark display of caste violence. The violence is interrupted, but the damage is done: Jo’s father warns Pariyan to stay out of his daughter’s life. The family fallout lands heavy on Pariyan, who must navigate a world that insists on caste purity. Jo, unaware of the full stakes, rebukes Pariyan the next day for missing her sister’s wedding, revealing the personal cost of their cross-caste bond.

Back at the campus, Pariyan’s sense of injustice intensifies. One day, after a troubling incident in class, he ends up in the principal’s room. To avoid further family trouble, he resorts to bribery to simulate a father figure—an act that foreshadows the harsh choices demanded by a society that denies his humanity. The Law College Principal Law College Principal becomes a pivotal figure who recognizes his innocence and urges him to keep fighting with courage. Yet the challenges keep mounting. In another confrontation, Sankaralingam’s anger at Pariyan’s defiance leads him to push Pariyan into the women’s toilet, and Pariyan is summoned to the principal’s room once more. This time, he brings his real father, a folk dancer in drag, in a bid to shield himself from the humiliating cycle of punishment.

As Pariyan emerges from the principal’s room, he discovers his father has been brutally hazed by Sankaralingam and his friends. The sight propels Pariyan into a frantic rush to the hospital to tend to his father’s injuries. The emotional aftermath deepens Jo’s father’s belief that Jo’s love for Pariyan could bring social ostracism upon their family. To protect the family’s caste honor, he hires Thatha Maistry, an aging assassin who views his job as a sacred duty and promises to end his life if his mission fails. The looming threat of violence begins to corrupt the fragile thread that connects Pariyan and Jo.

Maistry and Pariyan cross paths in uneasy terms, and Maistry even offers to broker a solution by talking to Pariyan. As Pariyan sits by his sick father, his mother urges restraint, arguing that humiliation and oppression have always existed and that violence will not bring lasting change. Jo is waiting in the hospital for Pariyan, and in a tender, heartbreaking moment, she reveals how much he means to her. She loves him but asks him to remain the same-hearted, approachable Pariyan she first met—someone who could still be her friend. Pariyan promises to stay true to that core.

The conflict reaches a violent crescendo when Maistry, desperate to eliminate his mark, tries to lure Pariyan onto a railway track, echoing Karuppi’s murder. Pariyan escapes, and a brutal clash ensues between Maistry and Pariyan. The truth surfaces: Maistry was sent by Jo’s father and Sankaralingam to crush the couple’s bond. Pariyan defeats Sankaralingam and the others, delivering a stark message about the limits of fear and cruelty. He then confronts Jo’s father, asserting that the life he’s living is in part a gift from Pariyan—one that Jo’s father could never fully claim without acknowledging the cost of his actions. Pariyan urges him to stop the harassment and walk away.

But Maistry’s gambit has failed, and he ends his life on the same railway track where his plan began. Jo, still largely unaware of the deeper violence, brings her father to meet Pariyan. As Jo steps away to fetch tea, her father asks for an apology. Pariyan’s response is unflinching: as long as Jo’s father expects Pariyan to stay as a “dog,” nothing will change. The film closes on a note that жures the stubborn cycles of caste prejudice, resilience, and the quiet, unspoken hope for a future where dignity and humanity can outpace cruelty.
