Balu, Kamal Haasan, and Velu serve in the British Indian Air Force as Allied forces clash over the skies of World War II. A brutal Japanese air raid rips through their mission, and their plane is shot down. Velu is gravely injured, and Balu must summon every ounce of stamina to carry him for miles until they reach a remote village in Assam. There, Velu regains consciousness and his health begins to improve under the care of Indroma and her father, who shelter them in their home. The quiet village becomes a fragile sanctuary, a place where fear from the war outside slowly gives way to a fragile hope inside.

When Japanese soldiers descend in search of Balu and Velu, Balu makes the hard choice to hide Velu. As the danger closes in, he sacrifices his own safety by surrendering to the soldiers to keep Velu alive. This act of selflessness echoes through the years that follow: Velu heals, and in time he marries Indroma, teaching her Tamil and affectionately calling her Indra. Yet happiness is fleeting. The day after their wedding, Velu is found by members of the British Indian Army and must depart, leaving his wife behind. Indra becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son, but tragedy follows soon after: the village where they lived is bombed, and Indra loses her eyesight. When Velu returns to search for his wife, all that remains are ruins, and he grieves, believing she is dead as he makes his way to Chennai to stay with his maternal uncle.

Five years pass. Balu, who has since joined the Indian National Army under Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose when Bose visited Japan, is acquitted in a court and released in Delhi. In a refugee camp, he encounters a blind Indra and learns that Indra’s father has just died. He vows to help Indra find Velu and bring them back together. He takes Indra and her son and travels to Chennai, hoping to reunite the scattered family. Their journey is filled with small moments of hope, such as Indra’s son gradually starting to call Balu “appa,” despite Indra’s protests.

In Chennai, they find a place to stay and a house owner who promises to help Balu secure a job in his company. During a visit to the owner’s office, Balu is stunned to realize that Velu now runs that very company. He travels to Velu’s home, only to discover that Velu has married his maternal uncle’s daughter Janaki, a woman who has heart problems and also has a son. Balu is shocked to learn that Velu believes Indra is dead, and he conceals the truth in order to protect Janaki from further pain. Velu’s faith in his own version of events complicates the path to reunion, and Balu’s loyalty is tested as he tries to navigate a web of loyalties, secrets, and love.

Velu rewards Balu with a high position in the company, deepening the tension between old loyalties and new truths. Janaki’s sister Saro falls in love with Balu, and Balu’s response is mutual, though complicated by the presence of Indra and Velu’s own marriage. As Velu discovers that Indra and her son are alive and living in Balu’s house, the emotional stakes rise even higher. Balu eventually decides to reveal the truth about Indra, her blindness, and Velu’s son, urging Velu not to speak with Indra if it might cost Janaki or Indra their lives. The revelation hits hard: Janaki learns that Indra is Velu’s first wife, and the shock proves too much. She dies soon after, but not before a final act of grace—she unites Balu and Saro, apologizing for her suspicions and expressing gratitude for all the sacrifices Balu has made for her husband’s family. In a poignant last wish, Janaki requests that her eyes be transplanted to Indra so that Indra’s long-impaired sight might be restored.

Through years of separation, sacrifice, and hidden truths, the story threads together duty to country, love across feuding loyalties, and the deep ties of family. The film examines how memory and responsibility can stretch across generations, testing trust and redefining what it means to protect those we love. In the end, it’s a tale about resilience: of Balu’s steadfast commitment to the people he cares for, Velu’s attempts to hold on to his own version of happiness, and Indra’s enduring hope for a sight that might one day return.
