Balakrishnan, an aged musician, travels with his granddaughter Veni, Shalini, to the Brihadeshwara Temple in Thanjavur, seeking asylum. There they cross paths with Mahendran, Jayaram, and his family, consisting of his grandparents and friend Lakshmanan, Kalabhavan Mani. Balakrishnan was an old acquaintance of Mahendran’s late father, a district collector, and this shared history makes the two families grow familiar with one another, laying a groundwork of trust amid their precarious situation.

One night, Mahendran saves Balakrishnan and Veni from Subhramaniyan, a distant relative who hunts them for an unpaid debt and has his eyes set on Veni. Balakrishnan remains on the run with Veni, driven by fear of the pursuer. That night, Balakrishnan dies in his sleep. After performing Balakrishnan’s final rites, Mahendran and his family decide to bring Veni back with them to their home, Sreemangalam.

Back at home, life gets a little chaotic as Veni adjusts to a new life. Bhama, Mahendran’s childhood sweetheart, grows jealous of the closeness between Mahendran and Veni. The household discovers that Veni has written a love letter and, after some inquiry, learns there is a boy named Kichamani, also known as Kichan, whom Veni loves. Kichamani was sent away by Balakrishnan after his clash with Subhramaniyan. To make Veni happy, Mahendran resolves to locate Kichamani and bring him to Sreemangalam, hoping to seal the couple’s happiness.

After some searching, he finds Kichamani, only to face a new complication: after Balakrishnan’s death, Kichamani went to find Veni at the temple but crossed paths with Subhramaniyan, who is also hunting Veni. In the ensuing confrontation, Kichamani accidentally kills Subhramaniyan and has been in hiding since. The case is explosive because it unfolds inside a temple, yet the lack of witnesses leaves the matter unresolved. Kichamani is overwhelmed with guilt for what happened, and Mahendran comforts him, assuring that everything will turn out all right, and reunites Kichamani with Veni.

As the family tries to settle into a new life and the wedding between Kichamani and Veni is set, a new challenge arises in the form of Hameed Rawther, a Tamil Nadu Police officer tasked with solving the murder. Rawther travels to Sreemangalam, following a trail of clues, and ends up staying as a guest. A tense game of wits unfolds between Rawther and Mahendran, the former driven by a strict sense of justice and the latter by his desperation to protect Kichamani and, by extension, Veni.

Ultimately, guilt gnaws at Kichamani, and he agrees to surrender, secretly telling the truth to a heartbroken Veni. But before Rawther can arrest him, Kichamani and Veni attempt suicide. They survive, and Mahendran is left devastated by their sorrow. In a final act of self-sacrifice, Mahendran asks Rawther to arrest him instead, to save Kichamani. Reluctantly, Rawther takes Mahendran away, leaving his own family to mourn. On the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, Rawther’s conscience wins out, and he lets Mahendran go, prepared to face suspension or even dismissal and to let Subhramaniyan’s case fade into obscurity. As Rawther departs, Mahendran begins the long walk back to his waiting family, carrying the hope that they might finally live free of trouble from now on.
