Dhananjay Pandit, Saif Ali Khan, and Aaftab, Ajay Devgn, are half-brothers whose outlooks on life could not be more different. Aaftab is a petty smuggler who brazenly ferries goods across the Rajasthan border into Pakistan, while Dhananjay is a sleek corporate yuppy living in the city, chasing success and appearances. Aaftab harbors a deep love for Ruksana, Manisha Koirala, but her family rejects him because he is illegitimate. Meanwhile, Dhananjay is dating Ragini Pandit, Namrata Shirodkar, and he is trying to come to terms with his father’s death.
When the brothers cross paths, their mutual venom is immediate and palpable. One night, Aaftab’s attempt to steal from a truck goes catastrophically wrong, exploding the vehicle and drawing a swarm of dangerous enforcers. In the ensuing chaos, Aaftab coerces Dhananjay into participating in a trap, and the two find themselves handcuffed together as they evade capture. An elaborate chase follows as they are pursued by the Border Security Force, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the border mafia who aim to incriminate them for anti-national activities and murder.
Forced to flee across a string of landscapes, the brothers survive a sequence of close calls on foot, on motorbikes, in cars, in stolen trucks, and even while still bound together on a moving goods train. The situation is brutal and ridiculous at times, testing their patience and grit as they navigate treacherous routes, taunting smugglers, and indifferent authorities. As they endure the danger and chaos, the old rivalry slowly gives way to a growing understanding and a reluctant trust, culminating in a shared resolve to clear their names and prove their innocence.
The film’s most expansive scenes were shot in the desert around Jaisalmer, with crucial sequences taking place in the ancient village of Kuldhara, a detail that lends a stark, sun-baked atmosphere to the climactic moments.
