Khandan 1965

In a sprawling rural estate, two brothers, Jeevandas Ramswaroop Lal and Shankar Ramswaroop Lal, inherit a substantial tract of farmland when their father Ramswaroop Lal dies. Bhagwanti J. Lal becomes Jeevandas’s wife, but the couple remains childless, while Shankar’s wife Parvati has two sons, Govind and Shyam.

Years pass. Govind suffers an accident—a jolt of electricity—that leaves his right hand paralyzed. He and Radha, his wife, become part of the next generation that grows up within the family.

Many years on, Shyam goes to the city to study and returns to find the family divided into two camps: on one side, Jeevandas, Bhagwanti, Shyam, Navrangi, and Neelima; on the other, Govind, Radha, Shankar, and Parvati. Old resentments have turned into practical debts and fragile loyalties.

Seeking to improve the finances, Jeevandas borrows money from Shyam to buy an elephant, a move that heightens tensions and foreshadows difficult choices ahead.

Navrangi, aligned with Jeevandas, envisions staging a carnival act around the elephant. The plan is risky: the show would involve a boy being tossed from the animal’s trunk and would use Govind’s son, raising the stakes for everyone involved.

The plot thickens when Navrangi abducts Navjeevandas Lal. Govind and Radha hurry to the carnival and manage to rescue Navjeevandas, but the confrontation that follows sees Navrangi attack Govind. Yet Govind regains his strength and fights back, jolting the family with the possibility that the rift can be bridged.

As the truth emerges, Jeevandas and the others realize Navrangi started the division that fractured their home. Navrangi is eventually arrested, and Govind and Shyam join forces to tear down the wall that had split the house in two, both literally and figuratively.

In the end, the entire family gathers, offering a shared prayer and reaffirming their unity, illustrating that reconciliation can outlast years of conflict.
