In the heart of the jungle, Kaa (Cate Blanchett), an Indian python with prophetic abilities, observes Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch), a Bengal tiger with a deep-seated grudge, as he breaks the jungle’s sacred laws by hunting down a family of humans. Only the young boy escapes his wrath. Bagheera (Christian Bale), a panther who is drawn to the commotion, intervenes, rescuing the boy, Mowgli (Rohan Chand), and taking him to the safety of a wolf family led by Nisha (Naomie Harris) and Vihaan (Eddie Marsan). However, Tabaqui (Tom Hollander), the cunning hyena servant of Shere Khan, discovers the boy before he can find refuge and is soon chased off.
Mowgli is brought before the wolf council, presided over by Akela (Peter Mullan), where his fate hangs in the balance. To ensure Mowgli’s survival, Bagheera offers a kill, while the easy-going bear Baloo (Andy Serkis) finds himself reluctantly compelled to agree. As Shere Khan arrives, intent on claiming Mowgli’s life, Akela steps in, declaring that the boy is now a member of their pack, forcing Shere Khan to leave, albeit with a vow to return.
Years pass, and Mowgli thrives within the pack. One fateful day, while swimming alone, he encounters Shere Khan once again. In a narrow escape from the tiger, Mowgli falls into a pit but is rescued by Hathi, a noble Indian elephant missing part of his tusk. Bagheera finds Mowgli and escorts him back to their home, revealing that Mowgli is human and urging him to seek refuge in the Man-Village for his safety. Despite this, Mowgli stubbornly declares his desire to remain a wolf, stating that he will only leave if he fails the initiation trial that will determine his status within the pack.
Throughout the trial, Bagheera takes on the role of hunter, constantly pursuing Mowgli and inadvertently causing him to falter, when he could have outshone the rest. Just as tensions rise, Mowgli is abducted by the mischievous Bandar-log, a troupe of monkeys under Tabaqui’s instruction, who plan to deliver him to Shere Khan. When Shere Khan attempts to consume Mowgli while he is unconscious, a fierce battle ensues between the tiger and his minions against Bagheera and Baloo. They struggle but soon find themselves overwhelmed—only the intervention of Kaa proves to be Mowgli’s salvation.
As the saga unfolds, Mowgli discovers that Kaa has been observing him and believes he possesses the potential to bring about change in the jungle. Kaa convinces him it is time to confront Shere Khan, who is again seeking to challenge Akela for dominance and a claim on Mowgli. Armed with fire stolen from the Man-Village, Mowgli confronts Shere Khan but loses face in front of Akela and is banished to the Man-Village in shame.
Upon arriving in the village, Mowgli is ensnared by the villagers and caged by John Lockwood (Matthew Rhys), a colonial hunter. During a visit, Bagheera encourages Mowgli to use diplomacy to earn the villagers’ trust, reminiscent of his own escape from captivity when younger. Gradually, Mowgli finds joy in village life, nurtured by the compassionate Messua (Freida Pinto) and acquiring essential skills under Lockwood’s guidance.
However, Mowgli’s perception of Lockwood shifts dramatically once he learns that Lockwood hunts not for survival but for sport, a revelation made all the more painful when he realizes that Lockwood has slain Bhoot, a wolf cub who was his dear friend. The threat of Shere Khan also looms over the wolves, driving them to the edge of the jungle. Determined to confront the danger, Mowgli rallies Baloo, Bagheera, and the wolf pack, insisting that Shere Khan must be defeated.
Despite their reservations about breaking jungle law, Mowgli moves forward with his plan, drawing Shere Khan to the village outskirts. With the aid of Hathi and other male elephants battling against the tiger, Mowgli is able to significantly wound Shere Khan. Chaos ensues when Lockwood accidentally grazes Mowgli with a bullet and fatally hurts Akela in rescuing him from the tiger’s onslaught. Before Lockwood can inflict more harm, he meets his demise at the hands of Hathi, and the jungle creatures rally around Mowgli, inspired by his bravery.
As Akela passes, he grants Mowgli his blessing to lead the jungle’s denizens and the wolf pack. Reaffirming his identity, Mowgli resolves to leave the village behind, returning to the jungle where he ultimately dispatches the ailing Shere Khan. In the wake of his victory, Mowgli is welcomed back into the fold of the jungle, and Kaa asserts that Mowgli has given the jungle a voice. She concludes that as long as Mowgli lives and protects the jungle, peace will endure.
