Ten-year-old Mowgli, Jamie Williams as Mowgli, has been raised among a wolf pack, Baloo the bear, and Bagheera the panther in the jungles of India, where danger hides at every turn. The bandar-log (monkey people) frequently try to kidnap him to learn the ways of man, but his greatest foe is Shere Khan the tiger, who killed his father.

Harrison, an American traveler, Billy Campbell spots the boy and dreams of taking him to his circus in America. Mowgli escapes and brings along Timo, the pet monkey of Harrison’s companion Chuchundra, portrayed by David Paul Francis. Harrison then enlists Buldeo, Gulshan Grover, a wealthy man who is actually Mowgli’s paternal uncle and rightful heir to his father’s inheritance. To track the boy, Buldeo hires Karait, Dyrk Ashton, a snake charmer who owns Kaa the python.

Mowgli is banished by the wolves for bringing home Timo, who is later kidnapped by the bandar-log. Baloo and Mowgli reach the Ancient City, the bandar-log’s stronghold, to save Timo, but Baloo is trapped in the process. Harrison, Buldeo, Karait, and Chuchundra capture Mowgli and bring him to their camp. At night, Shere Khan attacks the camp and Mowgli escapes after fighting him off, but Buldeo ambushes him and would kill him—only Harrison’s intervention saves him. Baloo escapes the bandar-log and rescues Mowgli. The two then return to the Ancient City and manage to save Timo, where they encounter King Murphy, Roddy McDowall, who contemplates making Mowgli king.

The four men split up to search for Mowgli. Harrison, with Timo, ends up in a cobra temple, but is injured as Buldeo reveals his true intent to murder his nephew by cutting the rope that would have let Mowgli climb out, leaving him to face the cobras alone. Baloo and Bagheera arrive to help Mowgli with the wolves, while Buldeo hides in a cannon lit by the bandar-log and is killed by Shere Khan. Meanwhile, Mowgli is rescued by Harrison and Karait, aided by Kaa, who carry him from the temple, and Timo is returned to Chuchundra.

King Murphy realizes that Mowgli must leave; he tells him that the city can be his someday, but the jungle belongs to the wild. Harrison offers to take Mowgli to the United States to raise him, but Mowgli chooses to run with the wolves, bidding farewell to Harrison as Chuchundra watches.
