Jerry [Bryan Cranston] Selbee and Marge [Annette Bening] Selbee are a retired couple in the small town of Evart, Michigan, who stumble upon a statistical loophole in the WinFall lottery that allows them to almost guarantee a win during rolldown weeks (the period when, after no grand prize has been won for a long stretch, the jackpot is redistributed to the next tier). They start small but quickly go all in, dipping into their savings to invest in the lottery, and their early bets pay off handsomely. When the Michigan branch of WinFall is shut down, they begin making trips to Massachusetts, where the same lottery remains active. Excited by their success, the Selbees share their discovery with friends and neighbors, forming a real community enterprise: GS Investment Strategies. This initiative reinvigorates Evart, helping old businesses reopen and even restoring the town’s Jazz Fest venue using the lottery winnings.

Their bold plan attracts attention from a group of Harvard students who also uncover the loophole. The students, led by Tyler Uly Schlesinger, confront the Selbees with a swagger that suggests they should join forces, but the Selbees stand firm in their approach and moral stance. Tensions rise as the intruding group begins to pressure Jerry to quit, and the situation grows tense as Tyler threatens him. Yet the support of his son Doug Selbee and the community strengthens Jerry’s resolve not to back down.

In the climactic showdown, Jerry exposes Tyler’s selfish tactics, drawing media attention and putting pressure on the Massachusetts Lottery. Faced with scrutiny and headlines, the lottery authority decides to shut down WinFall, effectively ending the Selbees’ gambling venture. The film doesn’t end with loss, however; Jerry and Marge return to Evart as heroes, their adventure having not only brought wealth but also revived the town’s spirit, sparked renewed interest in local businesses, and reminded everyone of the value of community and shared enterprise.

Across its warm, humorous, and sometimes tense moments, the story paints a portrait of how clever, well-intentioned ambition can ripple through a small town.
