In a puppet theater opening, three audience members—a military officer, a taxi driver [Mort Shuman], and a woman on a shopping trip [Elly Stone]—find themselves drawn as marionette caricatures against a backdrop of archival newsreel footage spanning the 1920s through the 1950s. They quickly discover they are trapped backstage as a cascade of oddities unfolds: the puppet master is found dead above the stage, a gigantic plaster hand descends to the floor, and a deafening siren blares without end. The tension escalates until the three manage to escape from the theater and reach a desolate beach, where the military officer tracks down the siren and kicks it, causing it to blow up and shatter the surreal boundary between performance and reality.
