Set in Langwith, a Derbyshire mining town, the Shaw family returns home to mark their parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. Mr. Shaw has spent 49 years as a coal miner and has one year left before retirement, while Mrs. Shaw is the daughter of a pig breeder, signaling a social class difference that threads through the family.

Andrew Shaw is a solicitor who gave up that path to pursue painting. The middle brother, Colin Shaw, was a Communist party member for a year and is now a prosperous but unfulfilled industrial relations manager for a car manufacturer, whose negotiations with the unions mask a deeper hollowness; his unmarried status and repressed sexuality are presented as his most honest concession to that emptiness. The youngest Steven Shaw is a teacher, married with four children, who has abandoned a book he had been writing for several years.

The family goes to an expensive restaurant, though most of the action unfolds in the couple’s living room, with a friendly neighbor present for some scenes. Over one evening, tensions build as they recall unpleasant incidents from the past: a premarital pregnancy, physical abuse, child neglect, the death of the couple’s first son, the mother’s suicide attempt, and the “turning out” of another son—sent to live with another family when a younger sibling arrived. The film uses these memories to examine how pride, disappointment, and unspoken grievances shape a family’s relationships as they confront what they hoped for vs. what they actually achieved.
