Rita Khanna, [Nanda], the only daughter and heiress of Raj Bahadur Chunnilal Khanna [Kamal Kapoor], travels to Jammu and Kashmir for a holiday with her maid Stella, [Shammi]. There she rents a houseboat and becomes friendly with its owner, Raja, [Shashi Kapoor], a gentle, romantic village man who shares his simple life with his younger sister Munni. After a few misunderstandings, their bond deepens into affection, and Raja falls in love with Rita. Before leaving, Rita promises to return the following year.

Back home, Rita’s father urges her to marry Kishore, but she keeps postponing. She returns to Kashmir the next year as promised, but Kishore accompanies her, bringing tension and jealousy into Raja’s life. Raja finally confesses his love and asks Rita to marry him. She chooses Raja and brings him to meet her father.

Raj Bahadur Chunnilal Khanna, wary of the union, tries to reason with his daughter but fails. He cautions that Raja comes from a different background and might not fit their world. Rita begs Raja to adapt his appearance and manners to blend in, and he agrees. To introduce the couple to the family, Raj Bahadur hosts a party; at the gathering, Raja struggles with watching Rita dance with other men, and jealousy leads to a quarrel. He leaves, saying he cannot adjust to her culture.

Rita realizes she misread the signals when she overhears her father revealing that he had engineered the rift to test their compatibility, convinced Raja would not tolerate Rita dancing with other men. Motivated by love, she resolves to join Raja in Kashmir and asks him to take her with him at the station. The film ends in a hopeful note as Raja pulls Rita into a moving train, and they share a tender embrace, stepping into a future together.
