Rahul Malhotra, Aamir Khan, is the caretaker of a garment company and is tasked with fulfilling a massive order — one hundred thousand shirts — for Sindhi businessman Mr Bijlani, Dalip Tahil. He also acts as guardian to his deceased sister’s three mischievous kids — Sunny, Kunal Khemu; Munni, Baby Ashrafa; and Vicky, Master Sharokh — a challenge he faces as a newcomer to parenting. When their mischief spirals out of control, Rahul disciplines them by locking them in their room, but the crafty youngsters slip away and head for a carnival in town.

At the carnival, Vyjayanti Iyer, Juhi Chawla Mehta, the bubbly daughter of a South Indian businessman and Carnatic music enthusiast, resists an arranged match with Natarajan Iyer, a Carnatic legend who carries a creepy edge. As punishment, she is locked up, but she soon escapes. She meets the three children at the carnival, and they quickly become friends. Vyjayanti confesses that she has no home, so the kids invite her to stay with them.

The children go to great lengths to hide Vyjayanti from Rahul. In a string of comic, nearly slapstick sequences, they stay one step ahead as Rahul tries to uncover the truth. Two nights later, Vyjayanti is finally revealed. At first Rahul is angry, but he also recognizes how much the kids care for her, and he decides to hire her as the children’s governess. Vyjayanti moves in and begins to look after the kids, and gradually, she and Rahul start to fall in love.

Then enters Maya, Navneet Nishan, Bijlani’s glamorous daughter, who becomes obsessed with Rahul and hopes to marry him, believing it would benefit the children. Rahul, sensing a strategic advantage, is open to the match, and Vyjayanti and the kids are uneasy about it because it could complicate their family.

News of the engagement spreads, and the kids work to derail it. When they discover Rahul’s and Vyjayanti’s feelings, they plot to stop the ceremony. The engagement is postponed during a dramatic party moment, but Rahul’s temper surfaces. The next morning, Bijlani arrives with Maya to offer a second chance, while Rahul defends Vyjayanti against their insults, revealing his own feelings in the process. The kids chase Bijlani and Maya away with rotten eggs and tomatoes, marking a playful but pointed victory for the couple.

To secure their future, Rahul’s workers agree to put in extra hours to fulfill the shirt order. The factory runs overtime and eventually, two lakh shirts are produced and loaded onto a truck destined for Bijlani. Bijlani hires thugs to block the delivery, but Rahul arrives on time with the completed order, and the criminals are arrested.

In the emotional finale, Vyjayanti is reunited with her father, who still disapproves of her marrying outside the Iyer clan. The workers and the children speak up, and even Natarajan lends his support to the couple. The father softens and agrees to the marriage, provided they wed in a South Indian ceremony. The film closes with Rahul and Vyjayanti’s marriage, surrounded by friends, family, and the workers who stood by them.
