Bablu Chaudhary / Manu Dada, Shah Rukh Khan, is a buoyant and almost childlike young man who dreams of becoming a chef. He moves through life with a simple, hopeful faith, always ready to bow his head in prayer when a small miracle seems possible. In the same bustling city, though, a much darker reflection exists: Manu, a ruthless gangster who is Bablu’s exact double, is constantly on the run from the law. Manu’s life is a sharp contrast to Bablu’s lighthearted warmth, and the two live in uneasy proximity, connected by a face that can deceive and a fate that can collide at any moment. As the day-to-day rhythms of Mumbai carry on—taxis, markets, and crowded rooms—two entwined destinies begin a delicate, dangerous dance around identity, loyalty, and love.

On his way to a job interview, Bablu meets Sonia Kapoor, Juhi Chawla Mehta a charming and capable hotel catering manager, in a cab. They bicker over who gets the front seat, but soon discover they’re heading to the same hotel. Bablu’s talent shines, and he lands the role of head chef, charming the hotel owner who harbors undisguised affection for Sonia, even though Sonia does not reciprocate his advances. The hotel manager makes it his mission to keep Bablu and Sonia apart, scheming to have Bablu fired and out of Sonia’s life. Yet as their professional collaboration grows, Bablu and Sonia’s rapport deepens into something warmer, intertwining their lives beyond just a working relationship. The budding romance is kinetic, hopeful, and constantly tested by the pressures of workplace politics and the shadow of Manu’s looming presence.

The tension intensifies when Bablu is mistakenly arrested after the police assume he is Manu. He fights to prove his true identity, a struggle that is complicated by Manu’s growing awareness of his doppelganger and the danger of being exposed. Once Bablu’s innocence is certified, he heads home only to find Manu lurking nearby, ready to strike. Manu aims to steal Bablu’s life by any means, threatening not only Bablu but the people Bablu cares about. The threat isn’t just bodily harm; it’s the theft of a future Bablu hopes to build with Sonia, a future that would never belong to the real Bablu if Manu has his way. The tension between who is who becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse, with each man trying to stay one step ahead of the other.

Manu, now posing as Bablu, begins to test Sonia, flirting with her as if he were Bablu, something Sonia steadfastly rejects. Lily, Manu’s girlfriend, also tries to woo Bablu by masquerading as Manu, but Bablu remains steadfast in his love for Sonia. Despite the deception, Bablu’s moral compass shines through; he starts to mentor Manu’s gang, teaching them basic ethics and a sense of responsibility that contrasts sharply with Manu’s criminal instincts. This unexpected act of mercy and guidance begins to blur the lines between rival factions, revealing a rare thread of humanity even within a world built on power and fear.

The situation comes to a head when Manu, still wearing Bablu’s skin, returns to Bablu’s house and finds the living room lit. Sensing a trap, he confronts Bablu’s mother, who mistakes him for Bablu and scolds him for not behaving like the son she knows. The truth becomes murky as the police close in on what they believe is Manu, while Sonia, stubborn and loyal, argues that the captured man is not the real target. In a chaotic turn of events, the genuine Bablu arrives at the scene and confirms who the real Manu is, but Manu counters with his own claim to Bablu’s life, insisting on a deadly showdown. The struggle escalates, and the two men pull at the loyalties of those around them, each trying to win the moral high ground in a fight that could cost lives.

At the critical moment, Lily steps forward with a courage that surprise even Bablu. She reveals that Bablu’s teachings about doing the right thing have moved her, and in a dramatic act of justice, she shoots Manu from behind, ending his threat once and for all. With Manu defeated, the air clears enough for Sonia and Bablu to seal their love with a wedding, a simple, heartfelt celebration that marks a return to peace after a storm of deceit, danger, and moral challenge. In the end, Lily’s choice to embrace goodness and Bablu’s unwavering devotion pave the way for a hopeful future, underscoring the film’s message that integrity and love can endure even when identities are called into question.
