What artifact does Indiana Jones steal during his first adventure in 1912?

Plot Summary

Henry Jones Sr., played by the inimitable Sean Connery, is the patriarch of Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr., a Boy Scout with a passion for antiquities that rivals his father’s. In 1912, Indy embarks on a scout expedition to the Utah mountains, where he stumbles upon a group of thieves pilfering a national treasure, The Cross of Coronado, from an ancient cave. As a young Indy watches, the thieves make off with the relic, leaving behind a trail of destruction and a sense of injustice that would shape his future endeavors.

The young adventurer’s conviction that national treasures belong in museums is put to the test when he steals a priceless artifact and flees on horseback, pursued by the thieves as he commandeers a train. Little does Indy know, this mode of transportation will lead him into a menagerie of unexpected terrors, including a tub of slithering serpents and a confrontation with ferocious felines within a lion’s den.

As the dust settles, Indy finds himself back home, where the sheriff arrives to apprehend the thieves and reclaim the stolen artifact. The chief thief, impressed by Indy’s cunning, gifts him a signature Fedora hat, an emblem of his newfound reputation as a seasoned treasure hunter.

The scene shifts to 1938, where Indy is now a university student, still grappling with the allure of the past. A mysterious brown paper package from Venice piques his curiosity, leading him to entrust the Cross to Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott), a trusted ally in the world of archaeology.

Indy’s path soon intersects with Walter Donovan (Julian Glover), a wealthy patron of the museum with ties to an oil drilling operation that has unearthed a fragment of a 12th-century stone marker in Ankara. The ancient relic speaks of the Holy Grail, the cup used by Jesus during the Last Supper and later entrusted to Joseph of Arimathea before its disappearance for over a thousand years.

The Grail’s tale is one of mystery and adventure, tracing its path from the Crucifixion to its rediscovery by three Knights of the First Crusade. Two of these knights set out across the desert, only to have one return to France, where he shared his story with a Franciscan Friar before passing away. The friar was left with the task of deciphering two ancient markers that would reveal the Grail’s location, setting the stage for Indy’s most perilous and thrilling quest yet.

As Donovan reveals, his project leader, Henry Jones Sr., has gone missing, leaving behind a cryptic trail that hints at the location of the Holy Grail. The enigmatic Henry had been hot on the heels of the second marker, which was hidden in the tomb of the second brother in Venice, Italy. His trusted assistant, Doctor Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody), broke the news to Donovan, but not before Henry had entrusted her with his research and findings.

In a package sent from Venice, Donovan receives Henry’s diary, which contains every known detail about the Grail. With this valuable information, Indy sets out to meet Schneider in Venice, where he uses Henry’s last clue to uncover the location of the second marker. As fate would have it, the marker lies hidden in a network of tunnels drenched in oil, set ablaze by a zealous cult determined to prevent the discovery of the Grail.

The leader of this Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword, Kazim (Kevork Malikyan), is hell-bent on protecting the sacred relic at any cost. When Indy captures him, he reveals that Henry has been taken to the castle of Brunwald in Germany, where Kazim’s cult awaits. In a moment of philosophical introspection, Kazim poses a question to Indy: Will he pursue the Grail for personal glory or for the greater good?

Back in the United States, Marcus and Indy pored over the markers, deciphering the name of a city - Alexandretta - located near modern-day Iskenderun. As they study Henry’s diary, they uncover the map that will lead them to the Grail. Meanwhile, in Germany, Schneider finds herself working for Walter, who has his sights set on claiming the Grail for himself and achieving immortality.

As Indy travels to Germany, he discovers that Schneider was secretly working with Walter all along. The cunning Walter seizes Henry’s diary, which had been missing a crucial page containing the map, and presents it to Hitler in Berlin. Walter then leaves Henry and Indy imprisoned in the castle, but they manage to escape and continue their perilous quest.

In Iskenderun, Marcus is reunited with Sallah (John Rhys-Davies), only to be confronted by German agents who kidnap him and retrieve the map from his possession. The stakes have never been higher as Indy finds himself racing against time to rescue his friend and uncover the secrets of the Holy Grail.

As Henry’s quest for the diary intensifies, driven by its secrets and the key to defeating the perilous traps guarding the Holy Grail, he embarks on a motorcycle journey with Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) to Berlin. Meanwhile, Elsa, an intellectual torn apart by the Nazis’ brutal destruction of cultural artifacts, witnesses the devastation firsthand but chooses to sympathize with Indy’s mission, allowing him to slip away undetected. Little do they know, however, that the ruthless SS Colonel Ernst Vogel (Michael Byrne) is hot on their heels, leading a team of Nazi soldiers hell-bent on capturing Indy and Henry.

Their narrow escape from certain doom via an airship, which morphs into an airplane, serves as a precursor to the treacherous path ahead. As they regroup with Sallah, they learn that Walter’s expedition is hot on the trail of the Grail in Jordan, having secured permission from the Sultan through a lavish bribe - a Rolls Royce Phantom. Kazim, an esteemed member of the Sultan’s court, becomes aware of Walter’s intentions and sets out to thwart his plans.

In a stunning coincidence, Indy and Henry find themselves under siege by both the cult and Vogel’s forces as they converge on Walter’s expedition caravan. The ensuing chaos claims the life of Kazim at the hands of Vogel’s merciless soldiers. Amidst the mayhem, Indy manages to rescue Marcus (Keith David) and Henry from the jaws of defeat, while Vogel meets his demise in a harrowing fall from a precipice.

With Walter closing in on the Grail, Indy finds himself compelled to embark on a perilous solo quest, pursued by his former ally-turned-adversary. His odyssey takes him through treacherous temple traps, each one designed to test the worthiness of the seeker - “Only the penitent man will pass,” “Only in the name of God will you pass,” and “Only the one with faith would pass.” Walter’s relentless pursuit culminates in a showdown at the Grail chamber, where Indy is forced to retrieve the sacred cup to save Henry’s life.

Indy’s determination ultimately leads him to the threshold of the Grail chamber, where he encounters the enigmatic 3rd brother, an ancient guardian who has been waiting for centuries to pass on the mantle of the Grail quest to the next worthy knight. Indy’s conviction in his own faith and purpose earns him a place among the select few who have achieved the ultimate spiritual fulfillment.

Meanwhile, Walter’s hubris gets the better of him as he succumbs to the temptation of drinking from the wrong cup, sealing his fate. Henry’s life is spared thanks to Indy’s selfless act, which also revives the wounded warrior with the healing properties of the sacred vessel. As Schneider (John Rhys-Davies) makes a break for it with the Grail, an earthquake strikes, precipitating a chain of events that ultimately sees the Grail tumble into a crevice and come to rest on a ledge.

In a poignant moment of introspection, Henry implores Indy to relinquish his hold on the Grail, acknowledging its sacredness and the imperative to let it be.
