Il Mistero di Bellavista 1985

From the terrace of his building, Professor Bellavista keeps watch as Halley’s Comet streaks across the night sky. The goalkeeper Salvatore and his friend Saverio, instead of framing the celestial event, pivot their telescope toward the window of the opposite building, convinced they are witnessing the murder of Mrs. Jolanda, a second-hand clothing dealer. When they reach the scene, the mistress of the suspect apartment—a fur trafficker—is missing, leaving ragù on the stove, and though no body is found, the sense that something is amiss lingers in the air.

The group, together with other acquaintances, launches a private investigation, stumbling upon a string of original and quirky figures: a pair of elderly sisters who pretend to have a crazy nephew living at home to avoid eviction; a decayed noble art expert who, with the complicity of his wife, stages dramas to sell fake paintings as valuable works; and eventually a link to the Italian-American furrier Frank Amodio, a shady trafficker and lover of the missing lady. Frank Amodio becomes a crucial, shady bridge that unravels part of the neighborhood’s tangled web.

Thanks to him, Bellavista’s son-in-law, who emigrated to Northern Italy, finds his first buyer for a nuclear shelter, a detail that injects a darkly practical note into the group’s clandestine efforts and pulls the investigation toward a broader picture of local schemes and evasions.

In the end, it becomes clear that the missing lady had actually left suddenly, a revelation that reframes the events and preserves the sense that in this corner of the city, curiosity and comedy walk hand in hand with crime.
