Julie Weir Joan Bennett and Ives Towner Henry Fonda are two teen sweethearts who vow to marry once Ives has earned enough money to support them.

The following Christmas, Julie heads into town with a friend to buy provisions for a Christmas party. Despite a raging blizzard, they race home along the mountain road; Julie becomes lost, and stumbles upon a small cottage rented by pulp-fiction writer Michael Shaw Alan Marshal. He seduces her, and the next morning they marry and elope to Paris.

Ten unhappy years pass. When Michael is shot in a brawl, Julie returns to her hometown with their daughter, Little Michael Shaw Genee Hall. Ives has become a college professor, and the two cross paths in a tense, guarded reunion. One of Ives’ students, Brenda Lane, Louise Platt has developed a massive crush on her teacher and uses almost the exact words Julie once spoke to him to reveal her own feelings.

Ives realizes he still loves Julie and invites her to the school prom. During the evening, the old spark reappears, but Brenda’s presence threatens to derail their chance. The couple decides to marry as soon as possible, planning to leave together.

When they return home, Brenda arrives in a distressed state, claiming she tried to hang herself after the party. Ives declares he cannot marry Julie while Brenda seems prepared to die for his love. Julie, overwhelmed, rushes to the car where Brenda waits and starts to drive away at high speed, insisting she will end both their chances because they cannot have Ives. Brenda pleads and reveals she never truly attempted suicide, admitting she only pretended to win him back.

In the end, Julie and Ives are finally married, their reconciliation sealed by patience, risk, and a stubborn, lasting love.
