Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween 48% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic, and IMDb users rate it 5.6/10. Our Echo Score gives it 54/100, strongest in sensory experience (62) and weakest in story & flow (49).
Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween Echo Score Breakdown
In terms of overall effect, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween presents a mixed and uneven experience that balances sporadic thrills with familiar shortcomings. While critics and viewers alike noted energetic scares and an enthusiastic production design, many also highlighted the derivative plot and underdeveloped characters. The sensory highlights often coexist with a lack of narrative innovation. Ultimately, the film delivers modest seasonal entertainment but falls short of leaving a lasting impression.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 58
In terms of art and craft, the film’s production design and visual palette are lively though not always inventive. Several observers praised the colourful sets and kitschy Halloween motifs, while others noted a reliance on familiar Amblin-style aesthetics that feel derivative. The direction of effects is serviceable but seldom striking. Overall, the artistic elements provide competent visual appeal without offering a distinctive creative vision.
- Character & Emotion 50
When it comes to character and emotion, performances are uneven and emotional depth is limited. Viewers frequently described the ensemble’s lack of wit or personality, while occasional praise fell on individual moments of energetic oddness. Dialogue often reads as generic, and the rapport among leads fails to recapture the original film’s dynamic chemistry. In sum, character work remains serviceable but rarely resonates on a meaningful level.
- Story & Flow 49
In terms of story and flow, the narrative is serviceable yet overly familiar and often underwhelming. Many noted that the film retreads the original’s structure with low stakes and rushed pacing, while its humor and plot twists lack sustained wit or originality. Subplots go unresolved, and the conclusion feels conveniently wrapped up. Consequently, the story maintains basic coherence but rarely achieves engaging momentum.
- Sensory Experience 62
When it comes to sensory experience, the film delivers a mix of effective scares and variable effects quality. Special effects and creature designs earn regular praise for their texture and playful kitsch, yet certain sequences rely on less convincing digital work. The score and sound design support the seasonal atmosphere but do not break new ground. Overall, the sensory elements provide intermittent thrills without consistent impact.
- Rewatch Factor 50
When assessing rewatch factor, the sequel offers modest short-term enjoyment but limited lasting appeal. Intermittent thrills and the nostalgic creature design may invite a second viewing for genre fans, yet the derivative plot and underdeveloped characters diminish replay value. Audience impressions suggest the film is serviceable for seasonal viewing but unlikely to sustain long-term interest. Overall, rewatchability remains moderate at best.
