An ex-private eye turned gun-for-hire named Malone, Thomas Jane, is hired to retrieve a suitcase from a building crowded with armed mobsters, but a brutal shootout erupts and Malone emerges as the sole survivor. Suspecting a set-up, he keeps the case’s only noteworthy item for himself—a small painted animal, the meaning of love, that becomes the trigger for a determined chase by several factions in the employ of local gangster Whitmore, Gregory Harrison.
Through a series of tense confrontations that leave bodies in his wake, Malone maneuvers through a maze of motives and threats, all circling the mystery of the case’s contents and the power it might reveal. At last he comes face to face with Whitmore, who finally concedes that he orchestrated the job and planted the toy—a keepsake belonging to Malone’s young son—to coerce Malone into erasing Whitmore’s criminal rivals and clearing the path for Whitmore to become a legitimate businessman, free from the shadow of his past.
Malone kills Whitmore and then phones his wife Gretchen Oyster and his son—who were previously presumed dead—without so much as a word, leaving a chilling moment of quiet amid the violence. A title card at the end reads, “To Be Continued…”
