In the hum of a late-night city, a taxi driver picks up a woman running through the streets, battered and frightened. She is Robin “Bobbie” Williams, and because she appears injured, she is taken to see Dr. Mitchell in her apartment building, even though he is a psychologist by trade. The encounter sets a tense, uneasy tone as the doctor’s office doors open into a private, almost confessional space where real lives can be laid bare.
Reluctantly, Bobbie agrees to a few sessions with the doctor and begins to tell her story. The sessions unfold as a careful, careful retelling of events that have shaped who she is and the risks she’s taken to survive. The narrative centers on the complexities of a life lived in the shadows, where choices are constrained by circumstance and the line between agency and coercion is often blurred.
Bobbie reveals her relationship with Larry Taylor, her boyfriend who was supposed to guard her on a job. Instead, he sits in a bar flirting with a young woman named Lisa, while an older client named Shelton subjects Bobbie to repeated abuse with a cane. The violence is not just physical but also a reflection of the power dynamics at play in Bobbie’s world, where protection and danger are tangled together.
Rowena Claiborne enters the story as the organizer of “dates” for the prostitutes, and she convinces Lisa to accompany Bobbie on a night out with two wealthy clients. One of these men, Jason Franklin, is soon offended upon discovering that the women are sex workers, and he begins to intimidate Lisa. The scene escalates quickly when Lisa, terrified and exposed, falls through a window to her death, leaving a chilling mark on everyone involved.
The fallout deepens the sense of moral complexity surrounding Bobbie’s life. Instead of offering sympathy, Larry reacts with anger, blaming Bobbie for jeopardizing their future earnings with Rowena. He becomes physically abusive, underscoring how violence and hostility are woven into the fabric of her existence.
Facing the weight of her past, Bobbie makes a decisive choice. She steps away from the life she has known, seeking something quieter and steadier by taking a job as a file clerk. Yet the fear of discovery lingers, as she hopes that no one at her new office will uncover the truth about her history. The film traces her struggle to reconcile desire for dignity with the harsh realities she has endured, painting a portrait of resilience amid a cycle of exploitation and fear.
