The film chronicles the life of Karol Wojtyła, a gifted Polish student whose talents are noticed by Archbishop Sapieha, prompting him to pursue the priesthood. He studies in Italy, France and Belgium, then returns to a repressive post‑Stalinist Poland where he becomes a thorn in the communist regime. Ultimately he ascends to the papacy as Pope John Paul II, leading the worldwide Catholic Church.
