In 1878, a British explorer, Sir Hubert Warrington, is held prisoner in a desolate Nile fortress by a ruthless Hindu who has uncovered Cleopatra’s tomb and its legendary treasure. Warrington refuses to reveal the tomb’s exact location, enduring brutal tortures as the Hindu schemes to force the secret from him. The Hindu heads back to England and deceives the Royal Geographical Society into organizing a daring rescue mission, hoping to claim the prize himself.

Included in the expedition is Ellen Burton, Sir Hubert’s fiancée, who becomes a central figure in the plan. The mission is spearheaded by a young explorer, Dr. Joseph Farady, who convinces the Society that a balloon-assisted approach offers the best chance of success. The trio—Farady, Ellen, and the Hindu—embarks on a perilous journey toward Egypt, facing a string of challenges that test their wits and stamina. They endure a tense encounter with cannibals and survive an aerial assault by menacing condors before reaching the fortress where Warrington is held.

A pivotal moment comes when a tear in the balloon forces the party to jettison ballast and belongings, with [Farady] diving into the Nile to lighten the load and keep the craft afloat. Upon their arrival, the Hindu subjects Ellen to torture on a stretching rack in a bid to extract Warrington’s secret. Farady and Ellen press on, but to keep their fragile vessel aloft, they are forced to discard the gold and jewels they hoped would fund their future.
