Stock car racer Dave Owens, Frankie Avalon from California, travels to Spartanburg, South Carolina to face the local champion Sonny Leander Fox, Fabian. Dave belts Leander in a race and immediately draws the attention of Leander’s girlfriend, Jane, Annette Funicello, and the wealthy Martha Brian, Julie Parrish.

Martha sees potential in Dave and persuades him to drive in a cross-country night race, though she withholds a crucial detail: he is unknowingly being used to move moonshine. She and her partner, Charlie Bigg, Harvey Lembeck, are pleased with Dave’s results, and Leander—who runs his own still and moonshine operation—watches with a mix of admiration and rivalry. Leander remains determined to beat Dave on the track, even challenging him to a dangerous figure-8 race that ends in a hard-fought draw.

IRS agents arrive with a chilling threat: six months in jail unless Dave helps take down the local moonshine ring. The pressure intensifies when a driver named Joey is killed during a run, forcing Dave and Leander to team up and investigate the crash. Their inquiry uncovers a startling setup: someone placed a huge mirror across the road. The evidence points to Charlie Bigg as the killer, motivated by jealousy after learning that Dave, the young California racer, has been sleeping with Martha.

As the investigation unfolds, Dave advances in the big race, but Leander sustains severe burns. Jane stays by Leander’s side, offering comfort and support as he begins to recover. In the final turn of events, Dave triumphs on the track while the web of deceit surrounding the moonshine operation is revealed, and the two men part ways with a mix of relief and caution. Dave drives off into the sunset with Martha, Julie Parrish joining them in a new, uncertain future.
