Based on the true story of baby Jessica McClure, who fell into a backyard drain pipe while playing. She became trapped about 20‑30 feet underground, and rescuers spent 58 hours freeing her. Workers feared heavy equipment could shake the earth and cause her to slip further down, so they used pumps and hand tools to limit vibration.

On a quiet afternoon in Midland, Texas, Jessica McClure is at her aunt’s house under the watch of her mother, Cissy. The large backyard is alive with children at play as Cissy steps inside to answer a phone call, leaving the kids momentarily unattended. When she returns, Jessica is missing. Assuming she’s playing a game of hide-and-seek, Cissy asks the other children where Jessica went. They point toward a narrow pipe—the entrance to an abandoned well. A chill runs through the yard as Jessica’s faint voice echos from deep inside, reminding everyone that she’s still there.
The first responders, Andy Glasscock and Manny Beltran, arrive shaken by the sight of Jessica’s disappearance and unsure of the best way to reach her. Soon, dozens of emergency workers, reporters, and onlookers converge on the backyard, transforming the scene into a full-scale rescue operation. An earth-mover is brought in to excavate around the pipe, but the vibrations only push Jessica deeper into the depths.
To reach her, Police Chief Richard Czech and Fire Chief James Roberts devise a plan to dig a parallel shaft and tunnel across to the abandoned well. The effort will require a shaft roughly 28 feet (8.5 meters) deep and cutting through solid rock. Progress stalls as the team encounters stubborn rock, forcing them to turn to a diamond-tipped drill bit to keep the work moving forward. In a show of resolve, rescuers accept a high-speed water drill—free of charge for the transport and use—to help tunnel across to Jessica.
When the moment finally arrives, O’Donnell, the paramedic assigned to retrieving Jessica, faces a daunting task in the narrow space. His initial attempt is thwarted by his own claustrophobia, causing him to retreat. He regroups and, guided by a doctor’s instructions that it’s permissible to break bones if necessary to pull her free—as long as her neck, back, and head remain unharmed—he returns to the shaft with renewed determination. After more than 58 hours trapped in the well, Jessica is finally pulled to safety, a testament to perseverance, teamwork, and the careful coordination of every hand involved in the rescue.
