Patty Duke (born Anna Marie Duke on 1946-12-14) was an American actress whose prodigious talent propelled her from a troubled childhood in Queens to the pinnacle of Hollywood. Raised by a mother struggling with depression and an alcoholic father, Duke entered the entertainment world at age six when the Ross talent managers discovered her and reshaped her identity, insisting “Anna Marie is dead.” By twelve she was a contestant on The $64,000 Question, and at fifteen she originated the role of Helen Keller on Broadway in The Miracle Worker, a performance that translated to the 1962 film and earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the youngest competitive‑category winner at that time. The success of the play led to the creation of The Patty Duke Show (1963‑1966), where she portrayed twins Patty and Cathy Lane, showcasing her versatility and earning an Emmy nomination. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she tackled more mature parts such as Neely O'Hara in Valley of the Dolls and the title role in Me, Natalie, winning a Golden Globe for the latter. Her career was marked by five major awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a reputation for both comedic timing and dramatic depth.

In the 1980s Duke broke new ground as the second woman to serve as President of the Screen Actors Guild (1985‑1988), where she navigated labor negotiations and guild relocation. After her 1982 diagnosis of bipolar disorder she became a vocal mental‑health advocate, authoring Call Me Anna and Brilliant Madness while lobbying Congress and working with NIMH and NAMI. Duke’s personal life included four marriages—Harry Falk, Michael Tell, John Astin, and Michael Pearce—and three children, including actors Sean and Mackenzie Astin. She continued to act into the 2000s, appearing on shows like Glee and Liv and Maddie, and remained active in advocacy until her death from sepsis on 2016-03-29 in Coeur d'Alone, Idaho.
