To raise the funds, they dive into a frenzy of chores around Donald’s lawn and gardens, cranking out a flurry of tasks until they can present a tidy invoice for the exact amount. Donald, too amused by their hustle, pays the bill and then imposes a curious rule: the money must be deposited in a locking musical coin bank, a device that literally sings a tune about thrift and discipline.

The nephews think they’ve succeeded in sneaking away with a moment of private effort, and they carry the bank up to their tree house to crack it open. But Donald is not really asleep, and he follows close behind to see what happens. After a brief scolding, he retrieves the coin bank and returns it to the house, hoping to lay down the lesson once more. The scheme to take the bank a second time goes differently, and the trio manages to slip away with the money, their spirits racing as they escape into the day’s next phase.

From a distance, Donald spots the group leaving a cigar store with something in hand, using a telescope to keep watch. He quickly jumps to a mistaken conclusion: he believes they bought the cigars to smoke them instead of giving them as a gift. Enraged, he decides to teach them a sharp, if misguided, lesson by making the triplets smoke all of the cigars themselves. The result is a hazy, exhausting scene as they end up passing out from the heavy smoke.

Just when the box is emptied and the moment seems to climax, Donald makes a shuddering discovery: a birthday card tucked inside the box, written by the nephews to celebrate him.
