A string of missing satellites from the Electric Wave Laboratory drifts above Japan, and soon people realize these collisions with unknown, protoplasmic “space cells” have produced something far from ordinary: a jellyfish-like creature that becomes known as Dogora. This planetary-scale oddity becomes the backdrop for a multi-layer investigation that threads together science, crime, and the panic of an unforeseen threat.
In parallel to the extraterrestrial mystery, a globe-spanning wave of diamond disappearances lands on the desk of Inspector Komai. His pursuit of the truth leads him to the crystallographer Dr. Munakata, whose laboratory circle includes Masayo Kirino, a key ally who helps connect the dots between the lab’s work and the criminal underworld. Inspector Komai begins tracing a self-styled diamond broker, Mark Jackson, who turns up in Munakata’s home just as a dramatic turn of events unfolds. Jackson is knocked out, and the gangsters seize him for interrogation, only to discover that the diamonds in question are synthetic fakes. The investigation widens to reveal that the stolen fakes are worthless, which complicates the criminals’ plans and deepens the mystery.
As the trio—Inspector Komai, Dr. Munakata, and Masayo Kirino—work through the clues, a wave of strange phenomena intensifies. They witness sparking clouds and an invisible force that lifts the nearby coal into the sky. Munakata speculates that these sparks may be a form of carbon, a theory that ties the otherworldly events to the terrestrial economy of coal and industry. The unseen force becomes more tangible when it begins to pull a coal truck into the air, signaling that the threat is not only theoretical but physically disruptive.
The criminals tighten their grip when they learn about a new shipment of raw diamonds arriving in Yokohama. They ambush the armored car, only to discover once again that the diamonds are counterfeit. In the midst of this, Hamako, a scheming gangster, eyes the opportunity to seize the real diamonds for herself. The police, already stretched by the diamond caper, are skeptical of a creature that might be pulling objects from the city by invisible means. Yet the investigation pushes forward, and Kirino, Masayo’s brother who works at the Electric Wave Laboratory, provides crucial context that helps the team connect the laboratory’s research to the strange incidents around them.
A turning point comes when Kirino and the others learn that the United Nations’ Space Planning Committee has concluded the space cells were mutated by the satellites’ radiation, giving birth to Dogora. Suddenly, the creature acts in a dramatic way, attacking Munakata’s safe to feast on the diamonds inside. The scientists’ confidence grows as Munakata reveals a bold scientific discovery that could turn the tide, and he decides to move toward the coal mines near northern Kyushu to test the monster’s next target. Jackson joins him, and together they head into the threat’s probable habitat, tracking radar anomalies as unidentified objects appear on screens.
In the mines, a counteroffensive begins with a novel weapon: a swarm of artificial wasps released to attack Dogora. The venom from these wasps begins a chemical reaction that crystallizes parts of Dogora’s body, producing fragments that fall to the city below. The plan to deploy this venom worldwide is set in motion as scientists work to mass-produce it, banking on the idea that carbon-based materials can be consumed more rapidly by this new biological weapon.
As night falls over Dokaiwan Bay, Dogora descends and sops up carbon-based materials from around the city. The military fires artillery in a bid to silence the creature, but Dogora reproduces through mitosis, multiplying its hunger and expanding its reach to global resources. The gangsters, eager for a real payoff, pursue Jackson and Komai, hoping that hidden diamonds lie in a safe-deposit box. Hamako recovers the box only to discover that it contains more synthetic diamonds, forcing a dangerous standoff where Jackson and Komai must escape the explosives that bind them.
With the artificial venom spreading quickly and Dogora under lethal pressure, the creature’s end approaches as the venom does its work. The spectacle of crystalline embers and dramatic confrontations culminates in Dogora’s demise, and Munakata prepares to represent the world’s interests at the United Nations, where the extraordinary Dogora incident becomes a case study for international science and policy. The story closes on a note that science, collaboration, and courage can confront even unlikely threats from beyond.
