Nikhil Mathur, Shahid Kapoor, is a young man from the quiet hill town of Samarpur in Uttarakhand who lives for two simple joys: his hometown and football, with a dream of discovering real love. He believes he can fall for one woman, but fate keeps flipping the script and landing him in a tangle of affection with three different women who each vow unwavering devotion.

First, Neha Chopra, Soha Ali Khan, his girlfriend of four years, is ambitious and restless, leaving their town for Mumbai to pursue a career as a flight attendant. Nikhil follows her to the big city in a bid to win her back.

At a crowded Mumbai railway station, Nikhil bumps into Shagun Shah, Ayesha Takia, a dominant, combative woman who immediately makes her dislike clear. Their paths cross again as he ends up living above her house, and though they constantly clash, a tougher exterior begins to crack beneath their banter.

Shagun’s mother Kavita, Zarina Wahab, responds with warmth, and Nikhil learns that Shagun’s father left when she was 12, a detail that helps explain the hardened shield she wears and her difficulty trusting others. Beneath the surface, there is a softer, longing side to Shagun that he starts to glimpse.

Meanwhile, Nikhil lands a job in a music store run by A.R. Rahman, Gulshan Grover in a cheeky parody, directly across from Neha’s training institute. There he meets a coworker named Sarah, Tulip Joshi, whose presence brings new energy and warmth to his days. Yet his attempts to win Neha back remain unreciprocated, and on the day she begins her first flight, she ends the romance.

Dejected, he returns to Samarpur, but Sarah requests to accompany him after hearing stories of his hometown. He agrees, hoping the move might help him find clarity.

In Samarpur, Sarah proves to be the opposite of Neha: calm, hopeful, and ready to settle into the town’s easy rhythms. His mother approves of the connection, and Nikhil begins to imagine a future with her. But just as he starts to feel hopeful, Sarah abruptly asks to leave Samarpur and promises to call from Mumbai, a call that never arrives.

Back in Mumbai, Nikhil searches for Sarah, only to learn she already has a boyfriend and that her attempts to provoke jealousy were all part of a larger game—leaving him feeling hurt and unsure about what’s real. He decides to finally leave the city for good.

Before departing, he visits Shagun’s mother Kavita and, reading Shagun’s computer diary, discovers that she is secretly in love with him. He gathers the courage to stay, but fate intervenes once more when Shagun runs to the railway platform, only to find that his train did not arrive that day. He decides to take one more chance and proposes to Shagun, who accepts, but Neha returns, hoping to win him back. Nikhil tells Neha to leave him alone, for his heart now leans toward Shagun.

Kavita gently asks Shagun to hear Nikhil out, and A.R. Rahman, thinking Sarah was the source of Nikhil’s torment, tries to fix him up with Sarah, who has apparently returned after realizing her own relationship was hollow. She hugs him, and again, Shagun—who has come to talk—watches and storms off in anger.

After hearing the full story, A.R. Rahman arranges a yacht party to bring a resolution to the tangled feelings. All three women attend, they quarrel, and everyone ends up in the water. Nikhil dives in to help, saving only Shagun, who doesn’t know how to swim. He returns to Samarpur believing he might have lost her forever, but Shagun finally realizes that Nikhil truly loves her and follows him home, where they decide to live happily ever after.

As Shagun confesses her love, Neha, Sarah, and A.R. Rahman reveal that their plan was a deliberate act to bring Nikhil and Shagun together—and, in a way, the plan succeeds.
