In 1844, the British Admiralty dispatches Sir William Walker, an agent provocateur, to the island of Queimada — a Portuguese colony in the Lesser Antilles whose name literally means “Burned” or “Burnt.” The overarching goal is to open the island to economic exploitation by the Antilles Royal Sugar Company, and Walker’s mission is to spark an uprising of enslaved Africans against the Portuguese regime, paving the way for a government that would bend to the company’s interests.
