Historian Walter Giller Michel Boissard and his wife Édith Scob Marie D’Aubray Boissand, descendants of the infamous Madame de Brinvilliers, are invited to the château where the enigmatic Mathias Desgrez awaits, portrayed by Frédéric Duvallès. Mathias, a man drawn to occult arts, practices these with his longtime associate, Antoine Balpêtré Dr. Hermann. Two nephews arrive too: Jean-Claude Brialy Marc Desgrez and Claude Rich Stéphane Desgrez, both eager for their inheritance. Marc’s wife Perrette Pradier Lucy Desgrez harbors her own ambitions, while Marc’s mistress Nadja Tiller Myra Schneider, Mathias’s personal nurse, hopes to accelerate his uncle’s death. And Mathias himself is deeply captivated by Marie Boissard.

One night, soon after, Mathias dies after a visit from a mysterious woman bearing medications, witnessed by a servant. He is buried, but his body mysteriously disappears just as analyses indicate poisoning. Who killed him? Lucy, eager to secure wealth? Myra, seeking to please her lover? Marie, seeking vengeance for a betrayed ancestor? Inspector Krauss, Claude Piéplu, begins to question everyone, delving into long-held secrets and rivalries as the manor’s fragile calm starts to crack.

The atmosphere thickens with family politics, occult overtones, and the slow unraveling of truths, painting a picture of a house where inheritance, desire, and fear collide in a suspenseful, meticulously paced mystery.
