On Bala, a remote Scottish island, the Van Traylen fund supports a school for orphans. Three wealthy trustees are murdered, their deaths staged as suicides or accidents, and three more trustees ride a bus with the children when the driver suddenly catches fire; he dies, while the others survive. The setup is tense, and the island’s quiet veil of respectability begins to crack as secrets creep to the surface.
One of the girls on the bus, Mary Valley, is brought to a London hospital, where she experiences strange seizures that baffle the medical staff and hint at something more than a simple medical mystery.
At the hospital, a young psychiatrist, Dr Knight(/actor/duncan-lamont), and a tabloid journalist interview the girl’s mother, hoping to enlist the aid of the hospital’s senior member, Sir Mark Ashley. The interview triggers a chain of events that pulls the hospital into the case and lays bare the danger lurking behind the Trustees’ deaths.
When Dr Knight is killed, Ashley enlists the aid of his friend and police inspector Col. Charles Bingham. The two set out to unravel the web of lies and reveal who is really behind the murders, taking their investigation from London back to Bala and into the heart of the island’s uneasy peace.
Meanwhile, the girl’s mother makes the journey to Bala as well, hoping to find her daughter but entering a maelstrom of suspicion that links her to the murders and to an explosion on a boat near the island that seems to kill several other trustees.
Ashley and Bingham press on, uncovering a sinister truth behind the killings at the center of the Van Traylen fund, and they must confront a conspiracy that reaches far beyond a single island or a handful of victims.
