Five teenagers—Robin, Ben, Chris, Amelia, and Nia—head into the woods the day after their friend Ethan ends his life following a lie Robin told to avoid prom. The place is whispered about as a locus where those who die vanish without a trace, a rumor that lingers in the air as they go deeper into the trees.
They pull out a game called Nightlight, hoping to push their nerves to the edge and prove they can handle the dark. Strange sounds echo around them, and every attempt to leave is thwarted by unseen forces, as if the woods themselves are pressing in from all sides. The mood grows tense and unsettled, the line between play and danger blurring with every step.
Robin discovers, through Nia’s video footage and Nia’s own confession, that four of the group had invited Nia out to scare her during the game. This revelation shakes the group’s trust and fractures the night from within as truth and manipulation mingle in the shadows. The teens keep getting separated and lost, each encounter with the forest’s chill heightening the sense that something old and unkind is pursuing them.
Robust in her resolve yet wrenched by fear, Robin concludes that Ethan’s restless spirit seeks vengeance for the lie that helped trigger his death, and she internalizes a heavy conviction that her actions set this tragedy in motion. As the night wears on, one by one the others fall victim to the peril that tracks them, until only Robin remains standing in the desolate terrain.
Desperation pushes Robin to engage with the likely revenant she believes is Ethan, trying to reason with him and begging for forgiveness. The confrontation culminates in a terrifying turn as she is drawn toward a church, where she becomes possessed and loses control over her fate. She turns on Nia, killing her, before stepping toward a cliff and leaping into the void. The camera pulls back to reveal the aftermath: the other teens appear in frame as the night’s violence becomes a matter of memory, and Ethan’s flashlight finally materializes in the dim light, a small, haunting trace of his presence.
A brief, final shot shows Ethan’s suicide note, but it offers no clear explanation or motive, leaving questions hanging in the air as the scene fades. The night leaves behind a chilling impression: a warning about secrets kept in fear, and the haunting idea that lying, even with protective intent, can unleash consequences that outlive the living.
