Boots and Saddles 1937

Following the death of his father, Edward, the young Earl of Granville, travels from England with his solicitor, Henry Wyndham, to his father’s ranch in the Western United States. There he is welcomed by ranch foreman Gene Autry and his sidekick Frog Millhouse Smiley Burnette, who promised their late friend that they would help shape the boy into a true Westerner. Gene is surprised by Edward’s arrogant demeanor and dismayed to learn that Wyndham plans to sell the ranch, which is deeply in debt. The clash between old-world manners and frontier grit sets the tone for an unlikely alliance.

Edward quickly proves there is more to him than first impressions. After Gene saves him from a runaway horse, the English lad apologizes for his earlier air, and Gene begins to see him as a “regular fellow.” They nickname him Spud, a nod to his father, and the group encourages him not to abandon the ranch. Meanwhile, Jim Neale Jim Neale, a wealthy rancher to whom the late earl owed money, approaches Edward with an offer to buy out the property, warning that failure to settle the debt could land him in court. The prospect of cashing out tempts Neale to propose selling the ranch’s cow ponies to the Army, a plan that could save the place if they can raise the money. In a series of growing challenges, the team rallies the horses, rounds them up, and drives them back toward the ranch, determined to keep their home intact.

Their efforts collide with a more complex scheme. Neale’s business maneuvers draw Gene and his friends to the fort where Colonel Allen Colonel Allen is stationed, and danger lurks in the shadows as a plot unfolds involving deception and hidden motives. Bernice Allen Bernice Allen, Colonel Allen’s daughter, recognizes Gene at the fort, and, in a bid to uncover the truth, she poses as a maidservant, hinting that the colonel might be hard of hearing. This misdirection foreshadows tricky days ahead, especially when a dramatic horse auction becomes a battleground of wits and nerve. That night, a fire rages through the barn housing the horses, and the mystery deepens when Frog recalls a thief who knocked him out and slipped away, yet left behind a watch that could identify the culprit.

At dawn, Gene is left to mount a lean-mission—he enters the race with the few horses still in hand. Edward expresses his admiration for the frontier-tested courage of Gene, and the team presses on. Frog finally reveals that the watch belongs to Joe Larkins Joe Larkins, one of Neale’s henchmen, exposing the underhanded schemes behind Neale’s bid to take the ranch. Despite Neale’s dirty tricks, Gene’s skill and grit carry the day, and Edward’s ranch is awarded the contract that will secure its future. In the aftermath, Joe Larkins’s confession lays bare Neale’s plans, and Gene and Bernice find common ground, putting their earlier tensions aside as the curtain falls on a hopeful conclusion.
