Gaucho Serenade 1940

Two down-and-out rodeo stars, Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette as Frog Millhouse, head from New York City to California with their car and horse trailer, hoping to turn a new corner in life.

On the road, a London schoolboy named Ronnie Willoughby, Clifford Severn, secretly stows away in their car, having just arrived from London by steamship and mistaking Gene and Frog for his escorts.

Ronnie does not know that his father, Frederick Willoughby, is actually in San Quentin, framed for embezzlement by his employer Edward Martin of the Western Packing Company, to cover his own criminal activities. To keep the misled boy safe and to prevent Willoughby from testifying for California’s small ranchers in a lawsuit against Martin, the schemer’s plan goes into motion: a cable invites Ronnie to visit his father’s vast spread, Rancho San Quentin, effectively a ploy to kidnap the child.

Gene recognizes the weight of the situation and decides to retain custody of Ronnie until he can investigate the truth, keeping the boy close while he pieces together the puzzle behind the charges against Willoughby. Along the way, they collide with Joyce Halloway, June Storey, a socialite ranch owner and runaway bride, and her little sister Patsy, Mary Lee. After a few clashes, Joyce and Patsy end up stowing away in Gene’s trailer, and Gene agrees to drive them to his California ranch, hoping the added company might help unravel the mounting trouble.

Jenkins and Carter, Martin’s henchmen, close in and attempt to kidnap Ronnie, but Gene and Frog Millhouse foil the effort, keeping the boy out of harm’s way as the group presses on. When they reach Joyce’s ranch, Joyce offers Ronnie refuge, presenting it as a safe stop rather than the trap his captors intended, complicating the lie but giving the group a chance to regroup.

Gene sends a wire to Willoughby letting him know Ronnie is with them, but the message is misread as a kidnapping note, prompting the convict to break out of prison in a desperate bid to reach his son. As the chase escalates, Willoughby arrives in time to confront the danger, but Martin and his henchmen hijack the train carrying him back to custody. In a dramatic turn, Gene intervenes and saves the day, clearing Frederick’s name and allowing him to return to Joyce’s ranch. With justice restored and Ronnie safe, Gene agrees to stay on as Joyce’s new foreman, marking a hopeful new chapter for everyone involved.
