US Marshal Luke Welsh, Charles Bronson, rides into Mound City to serve a warrant on Con Maynor and claim the $200 bounty that comes with the arrest. Maynor tries to outdraw the Marshal, but he misreads the town’s mood and loses the duel. At the coroner’s inquest, the shooting is ruled as self-defense, yet when the Marshal asks the judge to sign an affidavit confirming the facts, the paper comes back with the name missing. Without Maynor’s name on the record, the bounty cannot be collected, and the Marshal realizes that the townspeople’s affection for Maynor has created a wall of silence around him.
